Interesting but I think an Iranian 'checkmate' would be to "Baker" a US Carrier while it goes through the Straits of Hormuz. At the same time, overthrow the House of Saud. It is clear Iran already has a bomb (or more then one bought from Khan .... Korea .... Pakistan somewhere). Then Iran says the US did it and close the Straits to all US naval vessels.

Well, that would end any and all oil exports from the region for the foreseeable future...

You could be right about the oil exports but I bet it would restart within 1 month and they could still use the overland pipelines. Iran would dictate price and customers (no Middle East oil to the "Great Satan").
