San Rafael, Calif. (AP) --

Marin County residents have the highest median income in the state, nearly three times that of residents living in rural Imperial County, who have the lowest, according to recent figures released by the state Franchise Tax Board.

Residents filing jointly from Marin earned a median income of $94,410, according to a compilation of 2003 tax returns.

The county's median income on all returns was $44,797, also the highest in the state.

In all of California, the median jointly filed income was $58,653.

Marin residents' income is reflected in the price of housing in the area, experts said. A single family home in Marin goes for a median price of $918,000, according to a real estate data information service.

"Marin has been among the top counties in median income for a number of years now," said Patrick Hill, spokesman for the tax board.

It is somewhat ironic that in our system of capitalism we have people in Marin that have reached a top shelf score as it were in that system and yet are totally considered to be communist, socialist, tali-ban etc.

It's odd that the actual incomes in California are so low when compared to housing costs. We fled from California two years ago. I used answers.com to look up and compare my current county in the Midwest with Marin. Average income is about the same between the two (it's a difference of less than $300). Our house cost 1/6th what it would cost in Marin. Before we left CA, my husband looked at jobs in Marin county...the wages were the same in the Midwest and there for his job, so between that and the politics, it was an easy choice.
