Would not the sand have to be moist in order to 'pack on over the cleats"?
Back in my dune buggy days dry sand never stuck to rubber OR to stainless....

"...What is it about the human brain that makes that crater look like a bump..." It isn't the human brain, it's the loss of depth perception...shadow cast from/shadow cast onto look the same because you have no way of seeing the third dimension.
(Photo interpretation was a fun thing...but apt to be embarrassing)

Having said that, and finally seen the image...that is a weird looking bump/hole, depression with hard thingie in middle, or just a planetary zit.
But it is weird.

Would not the sand have to be moist in order to 'pack on over the cleats"?Excellent observation. I'll bet the scientists are scratching their heads over this.

I'm happy to say I had a tiny role in the build of one tiny part of them.

Let me try again. I posted the wrong orientations last time and they tended to look the same. What I wanted to show was when they look different. I find it very easy to see the first one as a bump but very hard to see the second as a bump. The usual explanation of, "We're used to the sun coming from the top not the bottom," just doesn't seem to do it for me. Maybe I'm nuts for trying to find deeper meaning, but that's how I am.

Take one of those plastic two piece easter eggs that come with indigestible candy in them...
lay one side down and the other up (you know what I mean) and look at the shadows.
Then (if you can) look straight down on them, or just imagine it; it ain't you, it's universal.
Even reversed, they are virtually impossible to tell...especially in black and white.
(Steroiscopic viewers do the trick so long as your initial orientation is correct)
IF you ever get the chance (?) to fly over California/Arizona/Etc. take a window seat and try to keep track of what is up and what is down......'taint easy and I've lived there most of my life.

They should have put their money into those bouncy air shocks.
Considering Mars gravity, that sucker would jump about ten feet into the air.
