Milk and meat prices are skyrocketing in Ukraine before May holidays (socialism gone wild)

KIEV, April 29 (Itar-Tass) - Foodstuff prices are skyrocketing in Ukraine on the eve of May holidays. Odessa residents were the first to respond to this situation: they staged a “foodstuff” protest rally in front of the townhall, Tass learnt on Friday at the police department of the Odessa Region. Residents expressed indignation at doubled prices for meat and milk.

A drop for meat prices, promised by the Ukrainian government in mid-March, has remained so far “an Easter fairy tale”. Meat producers refused to sell their goods at depressed prices, as the government demanded. Inspections of Ukrainian markets showed that slimy meat is put on counters at these prices, while fresh meat, as was the case in Soviet times, lies hidden under the counter. Markets in Zaporozhye, Odessa, Lvov, Uzhgorod, and Vinnitsa now sell one kilo of veal at five US dollars, while a kilo of pork or sirloin at six-seven dollars.

The Ukrainian government claimed that the meat market was grabbed by sharpsters, lining their pockets at the expense of producers and shoppers. According to Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko, “the difference between wholesale and retail prices reaches up to 70-80 percent”. Following the Easter and May Day holidays, “the government intends to shake up second-hand dealers,” the government press service reported.

Peasants complain at rising costs of fodders, veterinarian control and leasing of cold storages. According to Ukrainian economist Andrei Yarmak, “if the government runs, in the future too, the meat industry by administrative methods, the crisis will plunge deeper”.

Agricultural producers refused to sell the State Reserve Committee meat below its production cost. The government granted a loan of 500 million grivnas (around 100 million dollars) to this state committee to purchase foodstuffs so as to beat down prices on the domestic market with interventions

Socialism

The Ukrainian government claimed that the meat market was grabbed by sharpsters, lining their pockets at the expense of producers and shoppers.

Socialist rhetoric!

Following the Easter and May Day holidays, “the government intends to shake up second-hand dealers,” the government press service reported.

Communist ACTION!

Peasants complain at rising costs of fodders, veterinarian control and leasing of cold storages. According to Ukrainian economist Andrei Yarmak, “if the government runs, in the future too, the meat industry by administrative methods, the crisis will plunge deeper”.

Common sense, Yushchenko and Tymoshenko destroying the economy. They hiked up tariffs for rail and taxes for oil and then called oil companies racketeers for passing on the costs to consumers. They demanded to take direct control and set prices on oil and gas and to whom it can be sold. They are telling farmers what they can and can not export. They are nationalizing industry.

Oh please, tell me how Yushchenko is a "democrat" unless you mean he's a hero of the Democratic Party of the USA. Which would explain why he got so many visits from folks like Lieberman, Hitlery and McCaine.

Who here can defend this? THIS IS BLATENT SOCIALISM. Anyone making excuses for this needs to get over to their soul mates at DU.

Ukraine should never dare challenge Mother Russia. Do they think they're a free country or something?!

And in other news, Ukrainian newspaper headlines trumpet "Gas prices skyrocketing in the US (capitalism gone wild)".

Besides, buying up supply (unless they then resell or give it away) will only drive up prices not lower them. Gads, do these guys have an idea about economics?

Ukraine is having a hard time.

The klepto-oligarchs are the ones who are squeezing the economy and the government is falling back on interventionist solutions which will only aggrevate the situation.

The exchange rate for the Hrivna has fallen from 5.40/1 against the dollar to 5/1. Prices are up 25-30 percnt for staples, e.g., bread, milk, meat etc., while individual pay checks are not growing at all.

They have a lot to learn about free market economics.

regards,

Well, having the Prime Minister, two months into the new regime declare that they will start renationalizing industry doesn't help, neither does raising taxes, rail duties and tariffs on everything and then complaining prices go up. While they were in the West getting protest training, someone should have taken Yushchenko aside for some macroeconomics classes.

I read the article.

You apparently believe that we freepers are too stupid to understand the article so you felt the need to editorialize in the headline. I find that annoying and expressed it in one of the few ways that I know how.

Sarcasm.

What does Mother Russia or Bush have to do with the Ukraine? The Orange Revolution continues just as you wished.

This guy went on each of the Ukraine threads and posted the exact same thing. "These are not the socialists you think they are! It's all Russia's, Putin's, Bush's, Hally Comet's,... fault." The Progressive Jedi's Mind Trick.

JB6, Destro, Marmema and I told each of you this was going to happen after Yushchenko and the Gas Princess got into office, but you were convinced you knew better. Instead of blaming Russia go look in the mirror.

Every time I see a post attacking Ukraine, I look at the poster and it’s jb6. He’s been bashing Ukraine and Yushchenko ever since the Orange Revolution began. It appears that jb6 and his fellow travelers believe Ukraine would be heaven on earth only if Putin was allowed to steal their election and keep them under Moscow’s heel. I happen to believe that the Ukrainians should choose their leaders, even if we don’t agree with every decision those leaders make.

I had great hopes for Putin, but he has dashed them at every opportunity. I don’t trust his anti-democratic actions, his consolidation of power, his anti-American positions and apparent desire to re-create the “greater Russia” of the Soviet days. Forgive me, but based on some of our posters’ track records, I don’t believe their intentions are for a free, democratic and America-supporting Ukraine.
