"Doomsayers Say Pope Benedict Fits World End Prophecy"

For the people on the right [no pun intended] side of things, the outcome of prophecy is eventually a good thing.

Doesn't take long too figure out which side the people who call prophecy "doomsaying" are on, does it?

Fatima, John Paul II and the Final Battle
Phil Brennan, NewsMax.com
Friday, April 8, 2005

Perhaps no event more animated Pope John Paul II than a series of claimed appearances of the Virgin Mary during the early part of the 20th century in Fatima, Portugal.
Story Continues Below

In NewsMax Magazine's recent special report on John Paul II – "The Pope's Final Battle In These End Times" – we explore the Pope's unusual relationship with these supernatural events. [For more info Click Here.]

The Pope was long devoted to the Fatima cause. But his connection with the visions was bound by a remarkable coincidence.

May 13, 1981 — the day the Pope was shot by Turkish gunman Ali Agca in St. Peter's Square — was the same date that the Virgin Mary reportedly first appeared in 1917 to three Portuguese children: Lucia de Santos and her cousins, Jacinto and Francisco Marto.

The coincidence was not lost on the Pope, who chose May 13, 1982, exactly one year after he was nearly killed, to visit Fatima for a special pilgrimage.

The Pope's involvement with the Fatima visions is more curious when one understands that they are apocalyptic in their warnings.

In all, there were six appearances of the Virgin — or "apparitions" — at Fatima. Some were said to be marked by incredible visions.

On July 13 that same year, for example, the children were shown the consequences of sin when they were given a terrifying glimpse of hell.

A few months later, on October 13, in view of an estimated 70,000 people, the sun appeared to dance and give off a startling rainbow of colors before seeming to plunge toward the earth.

Eyewitness accounts by reporters substantiating the phenomenon were published in Portugal's largely anti-Catholic press and even the New York Times.

Throughout the apparitions, the need for repentance from sin, sacrifice and the daily recitation of the Rosary were emphasized.

The Pope's latter-day trip was to thank Mary for saving his life.

But that was not the only reason John Paul II went to Fatima. The Pope also traveled to reaffirm a pledge to implement the message first delivered there 65 years before. Mary, the children said, stressed how sin offended God and called people to attend to their spiritual lives.

The Virgin also warned of the evils that atheistic Russia would wreak upon the world. These claims, in fact, turned out to be prophetic.

Another mystery was that of the so-called Third Secret, which was to be read by whoever was Pope in 1960. In that year, Pope John XXIII read it and quickly sealed it again.

Asked in 1980 why it was not revealed, Pope John Paul II told an audience in Fulda, Germany, as reported in the October 1981 issue of the German magazine Stimme des Glaubins:

"Given the seriousness of the contents," the Pope said "my predecessors in the Petrine office diplomatically preferred to postpone publication so as not to encourage the world power of Communism to make certain moves."

The Pope continued: "Many wish to know simply from curiosity and a taste for the sensational, but they forget that knowledge also implies responsibility. They only seek the satisfaction of their curiosity, and that is dangerous if at the same time they are not disposed to do something, and if they are convinced that it is impossible to do anything against evil."

At this point the Pope grasped a Rosary and said: "Here is the remedy against this evil. Pray, pray, and ask for nothing more. Leave everything else to the Mother of God."

Eventually, the Pope ordered the secret revealed and on May 13, 2000, the Vatican released its text, which talked of the shooting of a Pope.

The Church said it interpreted the secret as already having happened. But some critics feel the secret deals with future calamity for the Pope, the church and the world.

In recent years, in a moment of candor, the Pope suggested that the world may be near some tipping point.

At a General Papal Audience at the Vatican on January 12, 2005, he seemed to recall the apocalyptic images of the three Fatima children when he spoke.

According to Italian Web site AGI online, he said Satan's time is short.

"Satan, the original adversary, who accused our brothers in the heavenly court, has now been cast down from heaven and therefore no longer has great power," John Paul II said. "He knows he has not much time left because history is about to see a radical turning point in freedom from evil and therefore he is reacting full of great fury."

He went on to proclaim "the resurrected Christ" in language that seems to echo the Pope's own attitude toward the suffering he had endured as he faced death.

"In Him are centered salvation, strength and the kingdom of our God," John Paul II said.

"In His victory are associated the Christian martyrs who chose the path of the cross, not yielding to evil and its virulence, but delivering themselves to the Father and uniting themselves to the death of Christ by means of a testimony of donation and courage which brought them to give up life in order to die."

They said the same about JPII.

They say it about all the Popes, don't they?

Saint's Prophecy: Only Two Popes Remain

When the cardinals of the world pick John Paul II's successor, they may well be choosing the next-to-last pope.

The pope who then follows this choice in the Chair of St. Peter will be the last pope, and after his reign Rome will be destroyed.

Story Continues Below

Such has been the prophecy of St. Malachy, an Irish bishop who at his death in 1148 A.D. was discovered to have left behind a prophetic list of all future popes beginning with Pope Celestine II, whose papacy began in 1143 A.D.

Malachy included a single line in Latin identifying a characteristic of each pope.

Historians say Malachy's prediction – wherein he listed just 112 popes – has been amazingly accurate.

According to his list, there are just two more popes after the late John Paul II.

Here are the seven last popes as identified from St. Malachy's list:

106. Pius XII 1939 - 1958
Eugenio Pacelli
Pastor Angelicus
Translated: An Angelic Shepherd

107. John XXIII 1968 - 1963
Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli
Pastor Et Natua
Translated: Pastor and Mariner

108. Paul VI 1963 - 1978
Giovanni Battista Montini
Flos Florum
Translated: Flower of Flowers

109. John Paul I 1978 - 1978
Albino Luciani
De Medietate Lunae
Translated: Of the Half Moon

110. John Paul II 1978 - 2005
Karol Jozef Wojtyla
De Labore Solis
Translated: From the Toil of the Sun

111. The next pope
"Gloria Olivae"
Translated: The Glory of the Olive

112. The last pope!
"Petrus Romanus"
Translated: Peter the Roman

Wrote St. Malachy of the last pope: "In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge the people. The End."

According to his biographer St. Bernard of Clairvaux, in his book "Life of Saint Malachy," the saint was known to have the gift of prophesy and had even predicted the exact day and hour of his own death. Saint Malachy was canonized in 1190 by Pope Clement III.

While in Rome in 1139, Saint Malachy is said to have gone into a trance and received a vision in which he foresaw all the popes from the death of Innocent II until the end of time.

Afterward he wrote a few words about each pope and gave the manuscript to Pope Innocent II, who is said to have deposited it in Vatican Archives, where it lay forgotten until it was discovered in 1590 and published. At the time, some questioned its authenticity and it has been the subject of debate ever since.

The manuscript contains 112 prophecies, which scholars have matched with each of the 110 popes and anti-popes since Innocent II .

Here are the prophecies for the most recent popes:

Paul VI. The words of the 108th prophecy are "Flos Florum" (Flower of Flowers). The 108th pope after Innocent II was Paul VI (1963-78). His coat of arms included three fleurs-de-lis (iris blossoms).

John Paul I. The 109th is "De Medietate Lunae" (Of the Half Moon). The corresponding pope was John Paul I (1978-78), who was born in the diocese of Belluno (beautiful moon) and was baptized Albino Luciani (white light). He became pope on August 26, 1978, when the moon appeared exactly half full. It was in its waning phase. He died the following month, soon after an eclipse of the moon.

John Paul II. The 110th is "De Labore Solis" (Of the Solar Eclipse, or From the Toil of the Sun). The corresponding pope was John Paul II (1978-2005). John Paul II was born on May 8, 1920 during an eclipse of the sun. Like the sun, he came out of the East (Poland). Like the sun, he visited countries all around the globe.
Today the final two prophecies are yet to be fulfilled:

The 111th prophecy is "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive). The meaning of the olive is unclear. The Order of Saint Benedict – not St. Malachy – has claimed that this pope will come from its ranks and Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its final fight against evil.

The 112th prophecy says, "In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus (Peter the Roman), who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people.

As a Catholic Convert (recovering Episcopalian) I find it amusing so many Protestants Fundamentalist preachers are quoting St Malachi. A Catholic PRIEST from the height of the middle ages. Is not this the very sort of fella the Protestants were rebelling against. Wafer worship and all the Catholic superstitions that protestantism was supposed to cast out as the work of the devil. We are talking about a man who believed in the spiritual transformation of a piece of bread into the real body of Christ. A belief every protestant rejects. Here is a man who venerated the perpetual virginity of Saint Mary. Here is a man who believed in seven sacraments not just two. The need for a priesthood and confession to a priest, not just in private prayer to God alone or before a congregation as some protestants do.

I am not attacking anyone but it is a bit ironic. I just want to let people think about that a moment.

"The Church said it interpreted the secret as already having happened. But some critics feel the secret deals with future calamity for the Pope, the church and the world."

And it was Cardinal Ratzinger who interpreted the "third secret", which I don't believe is accurate.

Prophecy on Pope Fulfilled by Eclipses?

A 10th Century Irish bishop - St. Malachy - predicted every pope that would preside over the Catholic Church.

Almost ten centuries ago, Malachy predicted this pope would be noted by an eclipse of the sun.

In an eerie coincidence, John Paul II was the only known pope to be born on the day of a solar eclipse.

But the prophetic link doesn't end there. Pope John Paul II will be buried this Friday during another solar eclipse.

Story Continues Below

Astronomers say that on Friday, the day of the Pope's funeral, a partial solar eclipse will blot out most of the sun and darken a wide area of the world, from the South Pacific to the Western Hemisphere.

Solar eclipses are not unusual. But what makes this coming Friday's eclipse notable is the fact that there was a near total eclipse of the sun seen across Europe on May 18, 1920, the very day that John Paul II was born in Poland.

Adding fuel to the arcane speculation about these events is the prophecy of St. Malachy.

Malachy was discovered to have left behind a prophetic list of all future popes beginning with Pope Celestine II, whose papacy began in 1143 A.D., up to and including the 112th. The list includes John Paul and just two more popes who will follow him.

In his list of popes, he uses a single line in Latin identifying a characteristic of each pope.

The description applied to the 110th pope on his list - John Paul II - is "De Labore Solis" (Of the Solar Eclipse), which seems to add great weight to the validity of St. Malachy’s chilling prophecy: that the next two popes chosen to succeed John Paul II will be the last popes.

After the reign of the last pope, "Peter the Roman," St. Malachy wrote, Rome will be destroyed.

As NewsMax.com reported April 3, Saint's Prophecy: Only Two Popes Remain, the 112th prophecy says, "In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will reign Petrus Romanus (Peter the Roman), who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city [Rome] will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people," an indication that the world will end.

"The Old Testament states: 'believe his prophets and you will prosper' -- so believe it. We are close to the return of the Judge of the nations. Christ is coming," wrote one Internet post by the Rev. Pat Reynolds.

Is this Reuters' way of getting on the weblog bandwagon? A random quote plucked from some internet forum? The Internet is such an encouragement to lazy journalists.

John Paul I.... He became pope on August 26, 1978, when the moon appeared exactly half full. It was in its waning phase.
On the day John Paul I was elected pope, the moon was neither exactly half full nor waning. For the record, it was waxing gibbous:
Phases of the Moon, 1978:
New Moon: Aug 17 14:13
First Quarter: Aug 24 15:41
Full Moon: Aug 31 13:18
Third Quarter: Sep 8 10:50

Good catch on what phase the moon was actually in. But it will be ignored, I'm sure, by the millions of people who have more interest in false prophecy than in fact.

Except that, as another poster correctly pointed out, the moon was NOT "exactly half full' but in its gibbous waning phase.
