Executives of America's leading cable systems have announced an initiative to "help families manage their television viewing and protect children from inappropriate programming." One pro-family group called the effort, announced Wednesday, a "$250-million sham."
"Take Control. It's Easy" is the name of the campaign, which will feature an enhanced TV ratings system and a $250-million multimedia public service campaign designed to inform the 70 million cable subscribers in the U.S. about parental control tools.
However, L. Brent Bozell, president of the Parents Television Council, blasted the program as an attempt "to spin the public with a multi-million-dollar campaign to promote channel blocking and V-chip technologies as an adequate remedy for families concerned about their children being exposed to violent, profane and sexually explicit programming.
"This $250-million sham is being foisted on American consumers by the cable industry with the sole purpose of shirking responsibility for its product," Bozell added.
The new initiative was launched in Washington, D.C., during a press conference hosted by Kyle McSlarrow, president and CEO of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association.
"The cable industry shares the concerns of many parents, who want to guard against TV content they feel may be inappropriate for their children," McSlarrow said. "While many cable customers already have the tools to block unwanted TV content, many are not aware how to use parental control features."

Step 1) Turn off the TV.
That is all.
Cost of this campaign: $0
No Mr. Bozell, the parents who blame TV for their childrens problems are the ones shirking their responsibility. And that responsibility is being parents!
He needs to turn his power (of getting myrmidons to write hundreds of letters apiece) to good (e.g. getting them to write their representatives to demand that taxes be cut to a reasonable level).
I just turned in my cable converter about an hour ago. The only thing I'll miss is the sports coverage, but thankfully my very young kids won't be inundated with all the crap out there. Now they'll just have to put up with my annoying CD collection :-)
