Student photo of reputed mobster is a hit - Have you seen this "Clown"?
Chicago Tribune ^ | April 27, 2005 | Jon Yates and Brendan McCarthy; Matt O'Connor contributed

A Columbia College student took this photo of reputed mob boss Joseph "the Clown" Lombardo-- without knowing who he was--for a school project just over a year ago.

The dapper old man on the bicycle looked pretty classy, so Columbia College student Val Carpenter pulled over and asked if she could take his photograph for her class project.

"He said sure, he struck a pose--he actually posed," Carpenter, 42, said Tuesday, shortly after she realized the photo she took along Grand Avenue about a year ago was apparently reputed Chicago mob boss Joey "the Clown" Lombardo.

The feds wish they could be so lucky and simply run into Lombardo on the street. Lombardo, 76, was indicted Monday on federal racketeering conspiracy charges and is the subject of an international manhunt.

Lombardo and Frank Schweihs, 75, a reputed mob hit man from Florida, were the only two of 14 men indicted in "Operation Family Secrets" whom federal agents were still searching for, FBI spokesman Ross Rice said Tuesday.

An FBI organized-corruption squad in Chicago that led the investigation into unsolved mob killings was knocking on doors of Lombardo's relatives and associates Tuesday, Ross said.

Carpenter, who attends Columbia part time, said she was working on a final project photographing people on bicycles when she ran across Lombardo. She said she took the shot and he asked her if she wanted to take more.

In a hurry, Carpenter declined and pedaled away on her own bike. At the time, she said, she did not know who the man was. She never asked his name but often waved at him. "He would say, `Hi.' He's just a friendly guy on the street on a bike," Carpenter said. "That's the thing cyclists do."

Goodfellas is the greatest mob movie of all time. The movie was spot on true to the book. I too read the book years before the movie came out and I was floored that a movie could be that true to the book. The book is actually titled "Wiseguys", but the movie came out at a time when a television show entitled "The Wiseguy" was popular.

re 33

But they had to make it into a "Leonardo Faggio" movie to attract the chicks. Movies don't seem to do well anymore unless the teen girl factor is added in. Too bad isn't it.

There are, it's estimated, anywhere from 47,000 to 100,000 such machines in the state. Do the math. It's a staggering amount of cash, and the Outfit takes half off the top. The owner gets the other half. The state doesn't get a dime.

Now that's my kind of business!

This is not the only photo the Trib got wrong. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-0504270017apr27,1,4739014.story?coll=chi-news-hed
The mobster arrested was Frank Calabrese Jr. The Trib publishes the photo of Frank Calabrese, a major horse owner in the Chicago area.

Excellent!
'Little Caesar' was a great movie, and Edward G. Robinson is one of my all-time favorite actors (obviously).

Didja click the link? That was my favorite part of posting it...although perhaps this link would have been better, given the subject matter. Different movie, though. : )

NO driver to 'turn' on you.

No license requirement or plates.

You can go the wrong way on a one-way and live.

Can ride/park virtually anywhere.

Nothing to search, no secure area to preserve 'evidence'.

No place to hide a bug or bomb, and no ignition system to power either.

Nobody would look for a mob boss on a bicycle.

Makes sense to me...

LOL! I noticed that also. Ann Coulter's legs are thicker.

Much more appealing, too, imho.

Good driver, I liked GoodFellas also, IMO, the movie about the NY Jewish boys who grew into mobsters was great too...was that movie "Once upon a time in NY"??
Just got back to SC, where I also live on an Atlantic Island, after a visit with the NY/NJ in-laws. Spent last Sunday in the City for 1st time in yrs...saw the WTC site up close as well as walked thru Central Park on a sunny Sunday afternoon...I always love to visit and spend a day (especially a Sunday) meandering Manhattan. I cannot help thinking that NYC and most of this region is really distinctly not American and probably hasn't been for a good while. NYC as well as the NE USA has been revolving around some strange Sun system that could be called a Secular System of Urbanity. The SSU also appears to be moving towards a new galaxy, orbiting a powerful Black Hole, the UN Star...or maybe I just spent too much time at the Museum of Nat.Hist....lol.
