Boy o boy. This man has just dug his own grave. You don't mess with Dr. Dobson in Colorado. He is a one termer and can kiss his carrier goodbye. I love this, they just continue to shoot themselves.

You're right. No one has picked up on it except for the TV station that aired it. You're right on the mark on this one.

I'm sure he would give me that 'deer in the headlights' look.

No, he would look at you with utter contempt because you take the Bible seriously.

diff source: more detail

In a letter to Focus Chairman Dr. James Dobson, Salazar, a lifelong Catholic, accused Focus of "hijacking" Christianity." The senator also condemned Dobson for agreeing to appear this Sunday in a national simulcast called "Justice Sunday," with Focus on the Family board member Albert Mohler, Jr., whom Salazar labeled as anti-Catholic.

"I would further encourage you to cease your unfounded attacks on the faith of my Democratic colleagues," Salazar wrote. "The Senate controversy over judges is simply about whether the rules should be broken in the pursuit of power. The controversy has nothing to do with the faith of any Democratic U.S. Senator."

Then, in the Rocky Mountain News, Salazar augmented his attack, saying that where "Focus on the Family and the conservative right wing is attempting to take the country will threaten the basic cornerstone of our freedom."

Cody Wertz, Salazar's press secretary, affirmed his boss's sentiments in an interview with CitizenLink today.

"He's saying that Focus on the Family and the right wing have a 'my way or the highway' approach to the way you are taking faith and religion, and that is on its way to creating a theocracy," Wertz said. "Our Constitution is founded in having a power in the minority and protecting those powers in the minority."

Dobson, in his reply to Salazar, told the senator "the excuses and personal attacks must stop."

"Of paramount concern is your claim that you have not observed an anti-religious bias on the part of any of your colleagues in the Senate," Dobson wrote. "The Democrats' filibuster of certain nominees suggests exactly the opposite. It is clear that liberals in the Senate are blocking judicial nominees with strong religious convictions precisely because of those convictions.

"In fact, your colleagues are on the record as citing the 'deeply held beliefs' and 'incredibly strong ideology' of certain nominees as reason for denying them up-or-down votes.

Wertz also stood by Salazar's indictment of Mohler.

"Dr. Mohler's comment, 'I believe that the Roman church is a false church, and believes in a false Gospel,' that's going against — that threatens (Sen. Salazar's) freedom to worship," he said. "What that quote is meant to do is divide. It's divisive and serves to belittle another church."

But Mohler, one of the nation's most prominent theologians, refused to back away from his statements, made as part of an extensive interview in 2000 on CNN's "Larry King Live." The president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary said he was discussing theology — and the distinction between Protestants and Catholics.

"Sen. Salazar's comments about me are evidence of either gross manipulation or abysmal ignorance," Mohler said. "Only he knows which is the case."

What's more, he added, Salazar's statements seem to be "evidence of political panic."

"His 'divide-and-conquer' tactic will not succeed," Mohler explained. "Anyone who is shocked that evangelical Christians and Roman Catholics disagree on fundamental theological doctrines is simply unaware of four centuries plus of church history. My statements reflect nothing more than classic evangelical theology.

"Not only do evangelicals hold concerns about the Roman Catholic Church, but the Roman Catholic Church, even in writings by the newly elected Pope Benedict XVI, makes the same point clear from the other side."

Focus on the Family spokeswoman Carrie Gordon Earll said the ministry has never attacked the religious beliefs of Salazar — or any senator, Democrat or Republican. Salazar is, however, trying to create "a religious smokescreen," she said.

Even though Dr. Mohler is a dumbass of the first water, I don't see how his silly opinions threaten Senator Salazar's freedom to pretend to worship in a Church whose moral doctrine he rejects.

It doesn't.

As to Dr. Mohler, I'm not of his denomination, just try to imagine your response to a poster here on FR who claims your pope is a "dumbass." If you can't imagine that you would react with vitriol, I'd say you're in denial.

Benedict XVI is not in the habit of making dumbass comments about Protestants in the first place.

Additionally, Dr. Mohler would probably be the first person to say that comparing him to the Pope is a poor analogy.

"too much of that stuff they call beer in Colorado?"

The beer is great here. Please don't associate Colorado beer with the likes of a Marxist such as Salazar. Of course if you're one of those people who drinks Bud or Miller then I can understand your confusion.

It looks to me like a lot was left out of the Mohler comment. You can't really judge his opinion on that quote. And what about the dash and then the ending? Is there a section left out? The statement as quoted doesn't really make sense.

What does a Catholic think the future holds, theologically speaking, for a Southern Baptist like myself? I find what they think interesting, but I am not offended by it in the least. I am secure enough in my beliefs to be completely unbothered by that. But on issues of morals and politics some of my very favorite people -- the ones I admire the most -- are Catholic. Some Jewish. And others. What they believe about my eternal soul is irrelevant. I don't care.
