Fortuna, Calif. -- The Pacific Lumber Co. announced Tuesday it would close its Fortuna sawmill, after what the company described as "one of the most difficult seven months in the company's history."
Pacific Lumber President and CEO Robert Manne said the company had been unable to harvest at sustainable levels and to get harvest plans approved by all state agencies in a timely manner.

Fortuna? The name sounds familiar. Is that near Ferndale? Eureka?
Well, we need to look at the bright side, look at all the trees that will be saved.

Something doesn't sound right. Fortuna is only a couple hundred miles away from one of the biggest housing booms in the country. New homes are being built in and around Sacramento like crazy. If this mill is missing out, then something is seriously wrong.
Get in line for your unemployment and welfare checks boys. Drain the system and the system will eventually go bust and correct its ways.
I'm sure Senators Feinswine and Boxers will find a way to blame this on President Bush.
Despite the cheap illegal labor?
What's wrong is that logging has all but shut down in this state. Especially true in the coastal areas. Still some going on the the inland pine forests. But the industry has been destroyed by the Green whackos. The mills in places with truly active logging, such as Canada, and of course, Dixie, is where the action is these days.
Ping.
The cost of preparing a Timber Harvest Permit is so high, that California lumber is not economic. 80% of the construction lumber used in California is imported from out of State. Most of the bureaucratic harvest requirements and mitigations result from regulations "protecting" "endangered species," virtually all of whose listing process involved outright fraud, whether it was spotted owls, coho salmon, or marbled murrelets.
Well..there goes another one! Thanks to the Eco Fruiti they havent a chance out there.
Got a relative who was a school administer in ORE. Back in the 80s before they shut everything down, the school had a budget that allowed for all kinds of programs. Last year before he quit, they had to cut off nearly all sports to make the budget.
Oh the promiss was during Klintoons deal there that, They'd make sure there were no shortfalls. YA RIGHT!
Centerville Beach Naval Facility (SOSUS station) was on the coast near Ferndale. Decomissioned in 1993.
Demowackos just got some voters thanks to their envirowacko wing
This is a result of PALCO's own actions. The delays on the logging plans are directly traceable to the Headwaters ordeal a few years ago. They stepped on a lot of toes and their actions had consequences. Although the enviros will consider this a victory, PALCO shot themselves in the foot.
I can't imagine what the cost of production must be and and then to have to ship it to the US and compete with domestic wood. Unbelieveable!
