Former Massachusetts Governor William Weld has confirmed that he is seriously considering running for governor of New York in 2006.
Weld, a moderate Republican, is relatively unknown to many New Yorkers, but he was born in New York City, raised on Long Island, and returned to the state in 2000.
NewsMax.com reported earlier that party elite were wooing Weld, 59, to run for governor if current Republican Governor George Pataki doesnt seek re-election. Pataki has not disclosed whether he will seek a fourth term.
Now Weld has told the New York Times he may run, and is so confident that he said he stood a good chance of beating Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, who had a sizeable lead over Pataki in recent polls.
"Eliots making his name the same way I made mine, and he would be tough to beat, the former federal prosecutor told the Times. "But I think I could beat him.
Weld stressed that he wont definitively announce his intentions until Pataki reveals his plans, which he is expected to do by June.
Weld, a fiscal conservative who is also socially liberal on issues like abortion, may be the type of GOP candidate considered electable in the liberal Empire State.
Ahhh NewsMax is confirming that he might, perhaps, maybe definitely, could be running for Governor of NY!

Sorry for the double post. I thought the first one didn't go thru.
I have it on good authority that right now Phantom Lord is mulling over which beer to drink while playing poker tonight.
Have you got your escape route planned yet?
Always liked Weld, though he didn't do any good for the Repubs in Mass. He's a good politician.
I wonder if Wacky Pataki is going to run again.
Yeha... but isn't he from...?
Oh. Right.
This is home of well-known New Yorker Hillary Clinton.
Never mind.
Dan
Nobody is going to derail the Spitzer express. Elliot is finally going to answer the age old question, "Could anybody be worse than Pataki?" with a feeble half-hearted, "Yeah, a little worse."
I don't know... Weld said if Pataki runs, he won't. But if Pataki runs, he'll lose.....
Pataki's approval rating is very low in NY. Jeeze the pickins are always slim in NY arent' they?
If Giuliani won't run, Pataki may stand a chance against HC in the Senate. Weld would be an acceptable replacement in Albany.
Weld is a drunk! You are right, he did nothing for GOP in Massachusetts. He is a RINO of the highest order.
Wasn't Andy Card part of the Weld circle?????
Definitely.
HA!
That's about all we can get elected here in NY. NYC calls the shots in state elections. Is MA (Boston) the same way? Are there alot of right wingers in MA or no?
I mean upstate NY is generally red, while the blue areas concentrate around NYC and Buffalo...
