Revolt of the Middle
The Washington Post ^ | 4/26/2005 | E. J. Dionne Jr.

Posted on 04/26/2005 10:48:47 AM PDT by beeler

If you were to prepare a list of the top 10 stories you will never, ever read in a newspaper, one of them would surely include a sentence beginning: "Thousands of angry, screaming moderates took to the streets yesterday demanding . . ."

You can finish that sentence however you would like. The accepted view in politics is that moderates don't get angry, don't scream and don't demonstrate. Politics these days is said to be dominated by ideological enthusiasts. Moderates are thought of as people who sit on the sidelines and decide which batch of true believers they can most easily live with.

But something important has happened since President Bush's inauguration. America's moderates may not be screaming, but they're in revolt. Many who reluctantly supported the president and the Republicans in 2004 are turning away. The party's agenda on Social Security, judges and the Terri Schiavo case is out of touch with where moderate voters stand. Worse for Bush and his party, most moderates have a practical, problem-solving view of government and think these issues are far less important than shoring up a shaky economy and improving living standards.

The moderates have rebelled before. This period in American politics is beginning to take on the contours of the years leading up to the 1992 election.

"Moderates" are just uninformed and/or apathetic liberals anyway...

EJ Dionne wouldn't know a moderate if it slapped him in the face.

Maybe E.J Dionne could show some proof of this so-called "Revolt". I think E.J. is just another bed wetting liberal who hasn't awakened from his wet dream

As usual EJ Dionne overestimates the outrage of the American people. And as usual EJ Dionne selectively uses polling data to make his point.

According to Democracy Corps, if Congressional elections were held today Democrats would win by 26 points among Moderates. Oh mercy! Hold on while I take my heart medication! That number is so stunning I can't wrap my mind around it!

And I love how Dionne delights in the poll showing that Bill Clinton is more popular (among respondants in this Democracy Corps poll) than Bush. He then goes on to gloss over the caveats of the pollsters: "Democrats are not yet integral to the narrative" of American politics and that the decline in the Republicans' public image "is not accompanied by image gains for the Democrats." Democrats still have a lot of work to do."

You'd never know it reading this piece. According to EJ the Republicans might as well pack up and go home. the Democrats are in now running the show!

There is much truth in this. However, they are actually very worried about "migration" AKA invasion and how it affects their living standards.

EJ Dionne has been writing this same "See? See? The wheels are falling off the Republican bus!" story three times a week since 1994. It has different subjects on a day-to-day basis, but it's the same general story. If it's not outrage over Clinton's impeachment, or outrage over the "stolen election" of 2000, then it's outrage over Terry Schiavo, or outrage over the war, or outrage over a dozen other issues.

According to him everybody is always outraged at Republicans. Except on election day. Then, miraculously, people aren't outraged anymore. Until they're done voting for Republicans and then they get outraged again!

"EJ Dionne wouldn't know..."
If his middle is revolting, he better relieve himself ASAP and then seek medical attention if necessary. Otherwise it could become real dirty there.
