No renewal for travel advisory (Texas Mexico border warning)

McALLEN — The U.S. State Department did not extend a travel announcement that warned American travelers about the dangerous security situation and drug trafficking along Mexico’s border.

The State Department issued the announcement in January, and it expired Monday.

The warning was first released during a wave of killings and kidnappings in Reynosa, Matamoros and Nuevo Laredo, mostly linked to drug trafficking.

Several bodies were discovered along highways in Reynosa, but officials say the violence has since decreased in this city. Nuevo Laredo, about three west of Reynosa across from Laredo, still is experiencing a violent crime wave, with several murders and kidnappings in recent weeks.

Arturo Salgado, vice consul for the McAllen Mexican Consulate, said violence has decreased in the Reynosa region of Tamaulipas. He attributes the decrease to the several hundred Mexican federal police officers that were stationed in and around Reynosa to curb the drug-related violence.

"I think the conclusion of the warning is it actually didn’t affect travelers not involved in drug trafficking and that travelers shouldn’t be discouraged or afraid of traveling," Salgado said.

He said travelers must use common sense, like visiting legitimate businesses during daylight and avoiding red-light districts, when going to any big city like Reynosa.
