Politician shot in own restaurant

A politician who represents the Conservatives on a district council in Oslo was shot in a restaurant he runs early Tuesday. He claims his family has been the victim of extortion.

"The motive was money," Ghazanfar Ali Khan told Aftenposten's web site. "They wanted me to pay."

Khan is one of two representatives for the Conservative Party (Høyre) on the Stovner district council. He also runs a restaurant, To Kokker Mat og Vinhus, on Brugata in Oslo.

He said he was closing up his restaurant about 3:40am when someone started shooting at the entrance. At least eight bullets hit the entrance and the restaurant's front window, according to VG Nett.

Khan says someone, who he claims he can identify, has been trying to get money out of his son. "This has been going on for a long time," he said. "And now I've become the target in a shooting episode. I have given the police information and hope they get this person."

A police spokesman said he couldn't confirm how many shots were fired. He said they had a suspect in the shooting and that local airports were under surveillance.

Now, this is very interesting, for an obscure reason.

The name seems Moslem--Pakistani, perhaps--and this guy is a member of the Conservative Party in Norway.

Perhaps some Moslems find it possible to assimilate into national cultures different than their own? Or, when looking at one tiny little detail, possibly an exception to the rule, am I missing a "bigger picture"?

Norway, by the way, is not to be confused with Sweden, which has a "Moslem problem" of much greater magnitude; the Moslem population of Norway, although growing, is very tiny, and Norwegians enforce their immigration laws with more vigor than most countries, including ours.

Could be of Christian or Jewish descent. May also be a reformed Muslim like that Sudanese lady in Holland.

It's been interesting, watching the assimilation of the Vietnamese into the.....Nebraska culture.

Even though Nebraska is nothing like South Vietnam had been, they seemed to fit in (perhaps because Nebraska like Norway does not have many people anyway), and once they got here, they got right to work.

And now, thirty years (or less) after their arrival, their children dominate the "honor rolls" of school, they have all sorts of flourishing businesses.

And even more encouragingly, they are the first ones to gripe publicly, and sometimes loudly, about excessive taxes and high utility bills--one of them was a member of the Omaha City Council ("tolerant," "liberal," "diverse" Lincoln has not advanced that far yet), and they tend to vote Republican.

This weekend, the secretary to the councilor of Oslo was stabbed in the back and assaulted by a gang of immigrant youths.

The knife missed his spine with an inch or something.

Quite an eventful few days for Oslo politicians and bureaucrats.

Cheers.

So.....that's what I was reading on the web-site of one of the television news enterprises in Norway--in Norwegian.

I got the impression someone "high" had gotten stabbed by someone non-Norwegian, but my "expertise" in reading Norwegian has a long way to go, and so I missed all of the other details.

However, I am trying.

My experience is that immigrants from a nation under communist rule will typically be a Republican.

This is a local level guy, so don't expect anyone to know of him, at least not unless they live in Oslo.

Local list of representatives (Stovner):

It figures this guy is from Oslo, they have an immigrant population of 14% I think, relative to 2% nationally. (Which leaves less than 0.5% for the rest of the country)

A quick websearch reveals that this guy is, well, trouble. At least he has been accused of beating up a journalist writing a story about alledged corruption amongst politicians of Pakistani descent. The journalist, another guy I've never heard of, apparantly had a history of writing critical articles on the immigrant mileu in Olso. He was writing an article about "alledged corruption amongst politicians of Pakistrani descent" for the Quidat, a magazine read by Oslo pakistanis at the time of the alledged incident.

More on that here for those who can read norwegian:

Aha.

Thank you, sir.

I thought the name sounded Pakistani.

So the guy is into politics because he thinks he can get "connections" and "favors" apparently--or at least it seems to me.

I know about as much as you do. I live in Ålesund, and so had never heard of this guy bfore I read your story. I ran a web search, and came up with a couple of listings of local politicians, and the article I posted.

I agree with you that he sounds like a dubious character, though to my knowledge he has not yet been convicted of anything.

It looks like his political career will be cut short though, whatever his reason for being politically active. Political liabilities don't last long in Norway, and this guy reeks liability so bad I can smell him from way over in Ålesund. I would be surprised to ever find him on the ballot of any party represented in government in the future.

Wow, Alesund is about as far west as one can get in Norway, without falling into the ocean.

One wonders which Norwegian on Free Republic lives the furthest north; it seems that most in Norway live in the "bulge," the southern part of the country.
