Back in the Thirties, my grandmother told a salesman, named Mr. Shitz (not sure of the spelling) to change his name. That reminds me: My grandmother would not marry my grandfather until he legally changed his name. She was only half Jewish and had her father's WASPy maiden name. She did not want to be a Mrs. Finkelstein because it was so identifiably Jewish and she didn't want her children to suffer because of it. This was in the 20's and there was a lot more prejudice than there is now. I think.
