LOS ANGELES - George Lopez underwent a kidney transplant with an organ donated by his wife, a publicist for the actor-comedian said Monday.
George and Ann Lopez "are resting comfortably in their Los Angeles home and are both expected to make a full recovery," according to a statement from spokeswoman Marleah Leslie.
The operation occurred last week at an undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles, said another spokeswoman, Ann Gurrola.
Lopez, star of the ABC comedy "George Lopez," had a genetic condition that caused kidney deterioration, the release said. Further information on the condition was unavailable, Gurrola said.
Filming on his TV show had wrapped for the season. Lopez also had completed work on the film "The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl," directed by Robert Rodriguez and opening June 10.
Lopez and his wife, a producer, have been married 12 years and have one child, a daughter, Gurrola said.

All the best to you George and Ann.

People are always described as "resting comfortably" after serious operations. Almost makes you want to go out and have an organ transplant. Nobody is ever said to be "heavily medicated" or "groaning in pain."

Not a fan of the show but I have a vague notion of who he is. All the best in his recovery.

And SwiftVet John O'Neill gave his kidney to his wife. That is true love. Had I known I was going to need a kidney, I'd have kept my ex around for a while. Nah--only joking. We were not compatible in any way, let alone a kidney match.

I just got approved by my HMO to start the process of being put on the transplant list. My wife has offered me her kidney (I agree; THAT gesture IS true love).

Amazing that she was a close enough match to be a donor.... hmmmmm Live unrelated donor transplants for kidneys are very common these days. If Lopez's wife was the same blood type, the transplant could very likely go ahead. Many congregations, fraternal associations, and the like, upon finding out that a member's kidneys have failed, have had volunteers line up to be tested. At any given time, only about half a million people in the U.S. have end-stage renal disease. It would take a tiny percentage of the U.S. population to get all of them transplanted -- just enough pledges needed to keep up a list of half a million donors. And transplant is NORMAL LIFE. Think about it.
