Microsoft Raises the Speed Limit With the Availability of 64-Bit Editions of Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Professional
More than 400 industry partners pledge support for new platform during the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference.
SEATTLE -- April 25, 2005 -- Microsoft Corp. Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates today announced the general availability of Microsoft® Windows Server (TM) 2003 x64 Editions and Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition during his keynote address at the 14th annual Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC). The new editions mark a major advancement in computing by providing a single platform that can easily run new 64-bit applications and existing 32-bit applications at peak performance. With these new server and desktop operating systems, Microsoft and a broad array of partners are bringing cost-effective 64-bit computing from the fringes into the mainstream.
"This is a time of profound change in our industry. The move from 32-bit to 64-bit computing offers a dramatic improvement in performance and reliability, enabling people to use their PCs in exciting new ways at work and at home," Gates said. "The introduction of Windows x64 editions, combined with a wide range of 64-bit applications and hardware, will help launch 64-bit computing into the mainstream."

Cool! Now you can crash more efficiently than ever!
MS bragging about speed and efficientcy is like driving in Falluja in an open air convertable.
All this means is that the viruses now have bigger pipes to use.
At least I don't have to turn off all the eye candy to run Doom3 at a killer framerate. :)
ping
woop-de-doo...LOL
I'm sure someone will find a way around the NX bit in the 64bit code...
Has anybody tried the beta? Does it really speed things up? |
It all depends on what application you are running. For the most part NO, until the software is designed to take advantage of it.
Yes, 64 bit XP Pro. No it didn't speed anything up, all the programs I used were 32 bit and they only ran at 32 bit!
Gates still sells crap, 64 bit or not. OS X and Linux are both 64 bit systems, and there are no viruses or spyware to contend with.
64 bit XP Pro on an AMD 64 bit chip, no Intel chip available at the time.
Word will still s*ck...
Of course not (rolls eyes heaven-ward).
We all know Linux was created thru G*d's very own hands and used his disciple, Linus Torvalds (or Moses II as we like to call him), to deliver the OS (in swaddling cloth) unto us mere mortals.
Repeat after me ... We are not worthy ... We are not worthy (feel free to chant this using a rosary)
Obviously, so does your sentence structure.
Why bother? Who would be affected? Maybe 3 people at a time? Picking on Linux is the equivalent of kicking a blind puppy.
Yes! Death to Microsoft!
