Even though I believe that libraries have a positive effect on our society and on societies in general, I agree with this article. There is no constitutional justification for the government to steal taxpayers' money and use it to pay for libraries. If something is actually valued by the taxpayers, which I believe in this case it is, then they will put up private funds to support it.

This is my first post. I've been lurking since memogate. Hi everyone!

Hey, there is no "constitutional justification" for building the roads or mainaining the firemen stations.

The true freemarket solution is to have PRIVATE firemen teams who will negotiate the price during the fire like Marcus Crassue did (the freemarketeer who helped to overthrow the Roman Republic).

If you're going to defend protecting the taxpayer against rape by the government, it has to apply to every non-constitutional expenditure

Are federal tax dollars used for public libraries? If not, there's no consitutional issue here.

Welcome!

Many of the libraries in small towns of the country were originally founded by private charities. It was a very wise charity, because it requires the beneficiaries to make a positive response on their part: they must actually go in and read. No one can read for someone else.

A Bookmobile, though, is a waste. It would be better if the books were simply mailed to shut-ins, or brought by friends.

Our state (NJ) requires that each town hoave a library, whether they need one or not. Libraries have videotapes, which are already available from rental places. No reason for that.
