~ MILITARY SHORT SPEAK ~
ArmyPatch small   NavySeal small   Air Force Seal   Marines Seal small   Coast Guard Seal small (better)

The military seems to have a language of its own, with many terms, Acronyms, initialisms and abbreviations that aren't generally used in the "civilian world."

What is an acronym? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words. It is spoken as one word.

What is an initialism? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words, but each letter is spoken separately.

What is an abbreviation? It is a shortened version of a word.

What is Short Speak? It is any and all of the above.

Want to know what  they are talking about?  Read on...

P, part 13

Polaris

An underwater/surface-launched surface-to-surface  solid-propellant ballistic missile with inertial guidance and nuclear warhead.  Designated as UGM-27 or UGM-27A with a 1200 nautical mile range, UGM-27B with a 1500 nautical mile range and UGM-27C with a 2500 nautical mile range.

Police

To clean up or pick up an area such as policing the firing line for brass.

Police Flag

Sometimes called the Distress Flag it is the national flag flown upside down. It was only used when an extreme situation confronted the captain on board ship. It is never used ashore.

Pollywog

undefined

A person who has never crossed the equator. Officially recognized by service record entries indicating date, time, latitude and longitude, the crossing of the equator involves elaborate preparation by the "shellbacks" (those who have crossed the equator before) to ensure the "pollywogs" (those who are about to cross the equator for the first time) are properly indoctrinated. All pollywogs, even the Commanding Officer if he has not crossed before, must participate.  To read more about the ceremony, click here!
Developed and proven by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), POMINS is an improved, portable mine-neutralization system carried by two men. Designed for infantry use, POMINS can be set up and used in less than one minute to clear a path 50 meters long and 50 centimeters wide through
anti-personnel minefields and/or barbed wire entanglements. POMINS can be operated in the dark and in the presence of combat smoke without the need for artificial light; and it leaves the carriers' hands free to fight while transporting the system. The line charge clearly defines a starting point.
Poncho
A multi-purpose rectangle of rubberized canvas with a hole in the middle so that the head can be inserted. It was used to fend off rain, as a tent or to carry bodies, among many other uses.

Poncho Liner
A camouflaged, quilted, light weight nylon blanket that ties to the inside of a poncho. It was usually the only blanket carried by troops in Vietnam.

Pond  Pacific Ocean

Pony Soldier  1st Cavalry Trooper

POO  priority operational objective

Poolee

An unofficial rank assigned by Marine recruiters to newly enlisted recruits in the delayed entry program and awaiting departure to recruit training. Some recruiters have regular, mandatory, formations in which rudimentary drill and physical training are conducted.

Poop  Information, as in straight poop, bad poop or poop from the group.

POPF  pop flags

Popeye

In air intercept, a code meaning "in clouds or area of reduced visibility.

POPGUN  policy and procedure governing the use of nicknames

Good to know there's an acronym for those folks!  LOL!

Popping Caps

Rapid-firing short rifle bursts to confuse the enemy.

Pop Ups

Aluminum hand held tubes holding a flare and a small parachute for field illumination.

port

Leftside (looking forward.)  Originally larboard, the term was changed in the late 18th Century to keep from confusing it with starboard, which means right. The port side of a ship will be illuminated with a red light.

Port and Starboard Liberty

A situation where half of a unit is always on duty while the other half is on liberty (off duty and usually off base getting drunk).

PORT CAP  automated port call system for AIT graduates

PORTAL  open source information system node

Portholes

Eyeglasses. Originally holes in the sides of ships to provide light and sometimes ventilation.

POS  piece of sh*t - we all have our personal definitions of this!  LOL!

Poseidon  Read about it here

A two-stage solid propellant ballistic missile capable of being launched from a specially configured submarine operating in either its surface or submerged mode.  The missile is equipped with internal guidance nuclear warheads and a maneuverable bus that has the capability to carry up to 14 re-entry bodies which can be directed to as many as 14 separate targets.  Designated as UGM-73A.

The Power Of Our Limits

Read:
Exodus 4:10-17

Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say. -Exodus 4:12

Bible In One Year: Psalm 43-45

cover Moses, on the occasion of his call by God, made excuses. "O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue" (Exodus 4:10).

The wording suggests that Moses had a speech impediment-perhaps he stuttered. But the Lord said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord?" (v.11).

Our impairments, our disabilities, our handicaps are not accidents; they are God-designed. He uses every one of our flaws for His own glory. God's way of dealing with what we call "limitations" is not to remove them but to endow them with strength and use them for good.

In the New Testament, Paul the apostle referred to an unspecified "thorn in the flesh" that he repeatedly asked the Lord to take from him (2 Corinthians 12:7-8). But God said, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness" (v.9).

Paul even learned to "take pleasure" in his troubles. "Most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me," he said (v.9). "For when I am weak, then I am strong" (v.10). -David Roper

All faithful saints who walk with God
Through weakness learn to trust His Word;
They're not immune to pain or tears,
But learn to rise above their fears. -D. De Haan

God's strength is best seen in our weakness.
