I thought bears were herbivors. Maybe, but I'm not gonna carry any herb on a hiking trip to find out.

It's possible that the bear just wanted to protect her nearby freshly killed moose, as well as her cubs. Of course, she might've decided an appetizer was in order. More moose for the cubs that way.
