Signs Stir Concern North Korea Might Test Nuclear Bomb

Diplomat in Asia to Confer With Officials

By Glenn Kessler

U.S. officials are increasingly concerned that North Korea may be preparing its first test of a nuclear weapon, though they warn that the information is sketchy and not definitive.

A top U.S. diplomat, Assistant Secretary of State Christopher R. Hill, flew to the region yesterday to consult over the weekend with officials in Beijing, Tokyo and Seoul about the signs that a test may be in the works. Officials especially want China, North Korea's main patron, to use its leverage with Pyongyang to stop it from conducting a test

But other officials believe North Korea has concluded that a nuclear test would be the only way to convince the world that it has joined the nuclear club. Although many nations would condemn the test, North Korea may have concluded that the consequences would eventually fade away.

But other officials believe North Korea has concluded that a nuclear test would be the only way to convince the world that it has joined the nuclear club. Although many nations would condemn the test, North Korea may have concluded that the consequences would eventually fade away. The administration, for instance, recently decided to restart F-16 fighter-jet sales to Pakistan, which were suspended 15 years ago because of that country's illicit nuclear activities.

I think that this is their game plan. In time, Kim Jong-il want to scare and wear down U.S. to cave in along with everybody else, and learn to live with nuclear N. Korea.

If the Pot-Bellied-Pig of Pyongyang tests his nuke we will respond by testing our latest sniper's bullet. North Korea is much easier than Iran. Kill the whack job at the top and the whole insane circus collapses.

if the north Koreans had any class they would invite Albright, Carter, and Clinton to the test as a kinda of "Thank you". After all, those three had everything to do with making it happen.

I think we should let North Korea test some nuclear bombs on their soil if they also let us test some bombs there too.

You don't suppose he's managed to BUY a nuke from someone
just to set off as an example.
That might be all he would need.

NK testing a bomb will only force Japan to amend their constitution to allow a military. China doesn't want this.

NK will not test.

Japan has had a military for decades. It's purely semantics.

Well, a military that can strike deep. They really don't have much of a way to "project" power. (Yes, some, but not much in comparison to their economic ability.)

And what does N. Korea win by testing a nuke?

- Numerous warheads targeted on their major population centers and military installations.
- A nuclear Japan and S. Korea.
- The US on DEFCON whenever they get frisky.

And that is just the beginning.
