This Day in History 25 years ago: A Vision of America Frozen in Time
The Washington Post Achives | April 24, 1980 | Lou Cannon

He speaks to the future in the phrases of the past. He believes, as he once told a class at his alma mater, that "we must learn from yesterday to have a better tomorrow." He quotes from Tom Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and sees Soviet expansion in much the same way Roosevelt did Nazi aggression. At age 69, Ronald Wilson Reagan, a cultural Democrat, has become the last best hope of Republican conservatives to capture the White House.

He sees a complex world in starkly simple terms. "For many years now, you and I have been shushed like children and told there are no simple answers to complex problems that are beyond our comprehension," he has said. "Well, the truth is that there are simple answers -- just not easy answers."

He celebrates traditional values, and his vision of America is constructed of textbook images frozen in time. In a 1978 speech, he put it this way: "At the heart of our [Republican] message should be five simple, familiar words....

Ronald Reagan believes that out of his views, a new coalition is building, a coalition whose banners pay homage to the past.

Yeah, it was just one man's opinion, right Mr. Cannon? It'll never go anywhere, right? Gee, you MSM people were just as smart in 1980 as you are today. Always one step ahead of your own curve.

Just five short words: family, work, neighborhood, freedom, peace."

Amazing how Reagan (and to an extent GWB) can distill the important things in just a few words. What a contrast to the complicated "say-nothing" canned rhetoric we hear from so many Democrats.

Those five short words sum up why I am a conservative. Think of these words from the liberal point of view.

Family - Single mom raising several kids in poverty (usually by different fathers).

Work - That single mom on welfare having to get on a city bus to get to the supermarket so she can spend her food stamps on chips and microwaveable meals for her kids.

Neighborhood - The ugly brick public housing projects where all these single moms on welfare live. Usually surrounded by drug dealers who conduct their business in glass-strewn courtyards with grafitti everywhere.

Freedom - The cradle-to-grave welfare system envisioned by liberals. Basically meaning that you have the freedom to never have to find a real job.

Peace - Something that these out-of-work liberals show up to protest for whenever some evil Republican wants to fight to give somebody else their freedom.

"...family, work, neighborhood, freedom, peace."

Still works for me.

You couldn't have nailed it more perfectly.

I remember the skepticsm that swirled around Ronald Reagan at the time from my liberal teachers and the media. They were in denial that Jimmah Cahtah was going down in flames. The election of 1980 represented a new era of hope for many of us in the post-Vietnam,post-Baby Boom generation.

That bozo shiiithead from plains ga was one of the worst presidents in memory, however the arkansas bubba might have edged him out for that title. Other 29th century shiiithead presidents, wooodrow wilson, franklin dummino rooosevelt, lindon banal johnson, trickeydick nixon, gerald ford... see a patern there? Ooops, left off Warnen G. Harding, while he wasnt any good, didnt do the republic any harm either.
