April 24: 1916 Easter Rebellion Begins(Ireland)

On Easter Monday in Dublin, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, a secret organization of Irish nationalists led by Patrick Pearse, launches the so-called Easter Rebellion, an armed uprising against British rule. Assisted by militant Irish socialists under James Connolly, Pearse and his fellow Republicans rioted and attacked British provincial government headquarters across Dublin and seized the Irish capital's General Post Office. Following these successes, they proclaimed the independence of Ireland and by the next morning were in control of much of the city. Later that day, however, British authorities launched a counteroffensive, and by April 29 the uprising had been crushed.

Pearse and 14 other nationalist leaders were executed for their participation in the Easter Rebellion and were held up as martyrs by many in Ireland. Armed protest continued, and in 1922 most of Ireland won independence with the declaration of the Irish Free State. Six northern counties of the island remained part of the United Kingdom, and some nationalists reorganized themselves into the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to continue their struggle for full Irish independence.

89 years later and the Irish in six counties still don't have their freedom and self-determination. As my father said, "I should have gone to Ireland to fight for freedom instead of France." And as we know today, truer words were never spoken.

"Twas England bid the Wild Geese fly
That small nations might be free:
Had they stayed and fought, sure their graves we'd keep
By the banks of the great North Sea.

"89 years later and the Irish in six counties still don't have their freedom and self-determination."

This is false. There are free elections in Northern Ireland. You are simply repeating the lies from the IRA's Ministry of Propaganda.

"As my father said, 'I should have gone to Ireland to fight for freedom instead of France.'"

Your father is to be commended for his service. He fought against one of the most evil regimes in history. To compare that struggle to the IRA's national socialist terrorism against Britain - our country's greatest ally - is obscene.

The majority of those who vote in Northern Ireland wish to remain part of the UK.If this were not the case, the IRA and their fellow thugs would be chanting "referendum...referendum...referendum".

My understanding of demographic trends in NI suggests that, quite soon, the anti-unionists will have the votes to win a refendum. But until then, the psychopaths with the bombs must be stopped.

And...P.S......I'm a Catholic of Irish decent.

As I walked the misty streets of Dublin last year, every corner seemed to have a great bronze statue of a poet or a patriot. The former were Nobel Laureates. The latter hung.

I think you have your wars mixed up. My father was in France in WWI.

"This is false. There are free elections in Northern Ireland. You are simply repeating the lies from the IRA's Ministry of Propaganda."

Irish self-determination is not "propaganda" unless you are the invader and occupier.

And one million dead Irishman and their families and seven hundred years of Irish history and British occupation and genocide would take exception to your tagging every Irishman who wants the self-determination that you enjoy as "national socialists terrorists." One man's terrorist(as Americans were called by the Brits during the 1770's) is another man's freedom fighter.

Hey genius, there wouldn't be a Republic of Ireland if not for the IRA!

And what do you call the Brits who were responsible the theft of Irish land and for the genocide of a million dead Irish?

I don't know where you learned your Irish history but you best go back and get a refund!

Can't you debate an issue without bringing your little Orangemen along? LMAO

If you're planning on a flame war, you're wasting your time.
I don't lower myself to listening to a lot of name calling which you have already started on your first post.

Go check out a book on Irish history, read it and let me know when you're done.

Are you sure that today's IRA is who you want to cast your lot with?

Do you understand that the democratically elected government of the Republic of Ireland is also against the IRA?  That they work with British and RUC police to capture IRA terrorists and bring them to justice?

Though not without controversy, the question on whether Ulster would remain a part of the UK was settled in 1922.  The civil war in Ireland after independence saw the loss of many great soldiers and statesmen, some who just wouldn't put down their gun unless they were killed themselves.   This is the war you seem to be fighting.  I can assure you, you've already lost.

Everyone who grows up in Ireland is treated to the history of the country and well knows the treachery of Cromwell and other British overlords.  Though the history of Ireland arouses justifiable bitterness towards the British of history, most Irish (though unfortunately not all) don't dwell on it to the point of making them hostile.  Catholics and Protestants of all stripes get a long just fine on both sides of the border in Ireland.  It's just those that look for trouble that seem to find it.

As Americans, we are at a disadvantage to knowing what is really happening in Ireland.  We already know we can't trust the mainstream media, either here or from Ireland.  Thus, I think it would be wise for you to read and learn from the Irish FReepers who are kind enough to bless this site.

Here is a site and a map of the British genocide that eventually brought about the Easter Rebellion.

Is that the verdict from the Montana jury?

Some of us, actually living - born, bred, and reared - in Ireland are progressive, and forward thinking.

Living in the past earns us what? Nothing but more bile to fuel our ulcers (note, I said ulcers - perhaps I should have said Ulsters!)

Yeah!  Let's go kick some Redcoat butt!!!!

Oh what, we did that already.  Oh, and the UK is America's staunchest ally in the world now.

Oh, well, OK, can we just slap a few British leftists around then?
