Bush will Talk Social Security in Galveston
Houston Chronicle ^ | April 23, 2005

President Bush will visit Galveston on Tuesday to talk about his Social Security reform program.

Bush will speak during a discussion at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Galveston County Republican Party Chairman Chris Stevens said Saturday that the details are not yet set.

Bush chose Galveston because the county is one of the few in the country that opted out of the Social Security system about 20 years ago in favor of a private retirement program. The law has since been changed to forbid any more government agencies from withdrawing from the systems.

The president needs to do a national address instead of this city by city road show. Every few days he talks to one city, then the dems follow it up nationally by slamming SS privatization. That means that even if Bush could talk to every city in the country, each person would hear him once and the dems a hundred times. At that rate he will lose badly.

He also needs to come up with a plan with actual numbers instead of a general direction. The Republicans in the Senate are too spineless to do the heavy lifting and the House doesn't seem to be a lot better. Tell me what percentage of my 15.4% I will get to keep and how much my SS payments will be reduced because of that. I already know that SS revenue will come in about 1/3 short in the 2040s. That reduction (or a matching tax increase) will happen no matter what. How much on top of that will payments be decreased?

And don't talk to me about add on accounts. Those already exist in IRAs and 401ks. Running add ons through SS will only screw them up.

I'm afraid to say it but the Bush bandwagon has run out of steam and new ideas.

At least he is making some half-hearted effort as he marks time .

His predecessor played golf and became a national embarrassment in HIS second term.
