Alright but- was it a crime to be a communist in the US? And we're people really black listed for being communists?
Russia was trying to take over the film industry? It sounds a bit far fetche that's all.
By the way- I think it ought to be a crime to be a communist in the US. That's not was we were founded on.

Not far fetched at all. Control all forms of media. Control education. Reap the benefits years later with a weakened opponent. That was the plan. Post #6 gives a brief synopsis.
It wasn't a crime to be a communist per se. Some of the communist activities (i.e., espionage) were clearly illegal and some were benign (but were sometimes used to fund the illegal activities).
There are a few books out there about the Venona Transcripts that go into great detail. You could also google Venona and get the NSA's website that has some of them online.

Nothing like a history lesson or two to answer your questions based on obvious misconceptions.
Fact #1. Neither the U.S. government, nor McCarthy, nor the Congressional Committee on UnAmerican Activities "black-listed" hollywood communists. Hollywood mogols black-listed the "TEN."
Fact #2. Communism is unAmerican, in fact, it is anti-American. It is subversive and is the very antithesis of the free American republic's precepts for governance. (Read Karl Marx and neoMarxists)
Fact #3. You require a comprehensive, objective study of socio-political history so that you can comprehend the extant context of the 1950's expose of communists entrenched in the U.S. state department and in other vital security agencies.
Start with: Soviet Russia and Third Reich (socialist-leftist movements) were allies by treaty in imperialistic invasions of European countries until...Well, WWII and stuff happened...(like: save "Vichy" France!)...then east & west Germany...then the Berlin Wall...The Third Reich is dead...Communist-tyranny aka Soviet Russia remains still the threatening imperialist invader of all Europe...and of "tomorrow the world."
Leftists refer to the U.S. as "imperialistic." Besides the evident projection of communism's goals, history proves there are not more imperialisticly driven intentions than those in communist movements and within its activism throughout the world.
