To: DePaul University
Whereas we the undersigned believe that academic institutions have an obligation to promote and encourage the free exchange of diverse ideas and opinions on controversial matters;
And whereas, after examining various accounts regarding the circumstances surrounding the unpaid suspension of DePaul Professor Thomas Klocek, we believe that he was punished primarily because of the content of opinions he expressed on a controversial subject;
And whereas we believe that his due process rights, including his right to an open, comprehensive hearing on the charges against him, his right to confront his accusers, and his right to academic freedom were completely ignored and flouted by DePaul University;
We the undersigned:
1. Call upon DePaul University to immediately and unconditionally reinstate Professor Klocek to his teaching position, and to convene an impartial hearing on any allegations against him, to be held by a group of independent First Amendment experts representing a variety of outlooks that reflect the views of the community as a whole.
2. Call upon scholars and other individuals who value the First Amendment and academic freedom to refrain from making monetary contributions to DePaul University, visiting the university, or attending any events involving the university until the above conditions are met.
3. Urgently request that organizations such as the ACLU and the American Association of University Professors that claim to support freedom of speech and academic freedom for all individuals regardless of their viewpoints, immediately speak out on behalf of the rights of Professor Klocek.
Sincerely, The Undersigned

This is the same University that keeps that nut Norman Finkelstein on the payroll

Is this a Catholic University? Pope Benedict has his work cut out for him.
If you'd like to be on or off this middle east/political ping list, please FR mail me.
It is.
As virtually everyone on FR knows, the pope has an e-mail address, benedictxvi@vatican.va
"(Finkelstein is) the most openly anti-Semitic Jew on the planet. DePaul employs Finkelstein as an assistant professor in political science, after Finkelstein got fired from two New York-area adjunct teaching jobs (at New York Uiversity and Hunter College) because of his pseudo-scholarship and fraudulent rantings against Jews and Israel.
Finkelstein is a disciple of Holocaust denier David Irving and claims Irving is an authoritative historian. Finkelstein refers to the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis as the "Six Million" in quotation marks, and says that nearly every Holocaust survivor is a fraud, a thief and a liar. (Finkelstein's own parents are Holocaust survivors and Finkelstein has long tried to capitalize on this as a way to legitimize his own anti-Semitism. The psychiatry department at Depaul might have interesting things to say about this.)
Finkelstein routinely libels Holocaust survivor, philosopher and writer Elie Wiesel in scurrilous terms. Finkelstein is the star on every Holocaust denial neo-Nazi web site on earth, serving as the "Jew who proved there was never any Holocaust." He has been denounced as a fraud and anti-Semite by Alan Dershowitz, by historian Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, by Dennis Prager, by Professor Omer Bartov, by the World Jewish Congress, and by just about everyone else on earth, gentile or Jew. The New York Times compared Finkelstein's book to the old czarist forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, ever popular with Saudis and Counterpunch columnists. Last year, Alan Dershowitz made wienerschnitzel out of Finkelstein in a public debate. So, naturally, Norman Finkelstein recently became the poster boy for the anti-Semites over at Counterpunch.

yes on depaul and georgetown...but back off on ND. there is not a university campus anywhere on this continent that has not been affected, or had its principles diluted, by a generation of moral relativism and pc thinking. that said, nd is still very catholic--from the student body to the staff to the professors to the administration. i know this first-hand.
Then your first hand experiences at ND differ from those I've heard from others. Isn't one of the two infamous "fathers" (major dissenters - Greeley and McBrien) still teaching at ND? If they no longer teach there, then I will stand corrected.
Then they should cease to call themselves Catholic.
"father" McBrien, whose first name escapes me at the moment, is a notorious dissenter from Catholic teaching, like Greeley and "sister" Joan Chittister. AmChurch, CINO, cafeteria teaching all the way. When I was in the early stages of my journey of crossing the Tiber from the ECUSA, I tried reading stuff by these three. Didn't get very far - to me these catholipgacans were writing the same drivel as the episcopagans (not to be confused with Anglicans, who are real Christians).
I'm not sure, but I think they're gone. It's an institution of 10,000 students, including grad students. And I wasn't out to correct you, I just wanted to point out that, the place didn't turn out to be as lib as I feared. I have a child who's just finishing soph year. Student body is quite conservative, quite pro-lfe...and voted majority bush. perhaps there is a future after all.
