The Senate moved toward approving $81 billion for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on Thursday in a measure that would push the total cost of combat and reconstruction past $300 billion.

Both the Senate and House versions of the measure would give President Bush much of the money he requested, but the chambers differ over what portion should go to military operations versus other assistance.

The legislation is the fifth emergency spending package Congress has passed for wars since the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. It would put the overall cost of combat and reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan — as well as Pentagon operations against terrorists worldwide — past $300 billion.

How about some spoils of war - say, a couple billion barrels of oil for all our trouble and loss of life?

But the price of beating kerry and all other liberals who decided to show their a**es during uncertain war times: PRICELESS

I am a Viet Nam era vet. I remember when the cost of Nam was being reported at TWO BILLION PER DAY (average). And how long did the VN war last, courtesy of Kennedy and Johnson? Is that around 3.6 trillion bucks or thereabouts?
(just to keep Iraq and Afghanistan in perspective). And even more enlightening, is if you figure the cost of WW2 in 2005 dollars!!!??? Astronomical.

The Iraqis have their own oil, they now have their own government, its time they

PAID THEIR OWN BILLS!

Billion dollars a day for a year would take care of their little bill quite well imho.

Yes, I'm a liberal if it means being fiscally conservative.

I realize your limited intellect can't possibly comprehend what $81 billion means, so I forgive you.

So? Ending the culture of chaos, death and tyranny in the Middle East that feeds the terrorist menace and securing the nation from more assaults on its shores is something you can't put a price tag on in terms of value. If this war begins the spread of democratic and pluralistic governance in the region and salts the soil in which terrorism germinates, then it will have been a bargain at twice the price.

WAR COST US?,WAR COST US??.

The complacency of the two party system is what "cost us"!

Countless government officials in the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government take their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution with no understanding of the responsibilities that oath entails.

Actually this is one of the few things the Feds do that they are supposed to be doing. DOD used to be I think over 75% of the National Budget, because defense was the main expense. Heck, even the Interstate Highway system was militarily related.
