An off-duty police officer’s weapon accidentally discharged twice when it fell from the officer’s waistband as he was using the bathroom at an auto auction house, police said.
The bullets fired from Officer Craig Clancy’s gun didn’t hurt anyone, but a round did chip off a minute fragment from the flooring that pierced the leg of a man washing his hands.
The incident occurred at about 11 a.m. today at the San Antonio Auto Auction, 2042 Ackerman Road.
San Antonio police Sgt. Gabe Trevino, the department’s spokesman, said it wasn’t immediately known why Clancy was at the auction house, but that he wasn’t working.
The gun fell from Clancy’s waistband and went off when he tried to keep it from falling to the ground, Trevino said.
The man hit by the chipped flooring was taken to Southeast Baptist Hospital to be checked out.
The department’s shooting team is investigating.
