I don't agree. The view of American justice took a big black-eye around the world in the Terry Schiavo case. The whole world saw that she did not receive anything close to justice, or even due process.
Nor was it universally admired before. Frivolous lawsuits that take years to try and then receive "jackpot justice" are certainly not envied by most other countries.
That is not to take away the very good things about our system: we have a fine Constitution which provides a solid base for a system of laws. Our system is well-designed, but we should not ignore some of the problems that are there, which I myself would rate mostly emanate from an arrogant judiciary and a vast surplus of laws.
Ah. Do you spiritualize that little verse that says, "Thou shalt not murder", too?
I can't wait to see how you spin that one...
I gave you a succinct answer. I can't help it if you refuse to listen.
First of all, Terri wasn't murdered. She was allowed to die. Secondly, define scriptural murder.
I don't see in their consitution anywhere where life is above the others. It is written as equal.
It was meant in the context of one's own life. Those how followed Jones and Manson were kooks. Schiave, as much as he is not much of a human, was legally since Terri could no longer communicate her voice. That's part of the marraige contract. When you are married, you become one, yoked together. The moral of this story is be careful who you get in bed with when you repeat your marriage vows.
You're a very confused person.
I seek guideance everyday. But I honestly think there are many, and I say this with respect, including you, that are trying to hijack the word for self serving purposes. The culture will be just fine if those of faith lead the masses to Christ rather than use the hot buttons of the day and outrage. There is so much more to coming to grips with the kingdom of God than the culture of life. And frankly, outrage, if created for the wrong reasons is just as much as sin as murder. The words Terri was murdered is to create outrage.
No.
Those words are meant to communicate the exact truth of the matter.
If outrage is the result, it is because murdering a helpless disabled person by depriving them of water and food until they die is OUTRAGEOUS.
We don't know for sure what actions of Terri's that may have lead her to be in her contition. IF, it was her dietary regime, then some of the result of her fate lies in her hands. She will answer for that if that is the case. And if this was part of the actions created by her, then maybe part of her reward for that was Michaels ultimate actions. I can't answer those questions. I can't paint the pictures with words and images that a professional like you can. I'm just an average joe expressing my opinion.
Schiavo is a tragic case. A pretty woman struck in the prime of life. A family squabble. Sadly, both sides of the family aren't clean in all these matters. Money influenced both. But in both cases, neither totally put this in God's hands. Totally. Nor did the supporters of Terri or the supporters of Michael.
Gods' will was done. If not He would have intervened. He has before. Read the scriptures. IF this was important to Him, something other than the outcome would have happened. Or someone would have been inspired to take control. They didn't.
I'm off to chruch to learn more about this wonder Father we have.
Pray hard.
It's funny, but a few week ago I heard someone say that if you're sent by God, you will have the tools to accomplish the task. If you just went, then you will fail.
There has been a lot of criticism of Olson's piece on this thread that does not gibe with what he wrote. He's criticizing judges on the basis of their worst tendencies.
Great quote.
Now, if the people we have all worked so hard to elect would just exerise the powers given them to put a stop to it, we could stop fearing that our efforts may have been wasted.
Too often these days, we have to wonder which side they're on.
'Winning' or 'losing' is not our responsibility. Being faithful to what God has called us to do, win or lose, is.
...and sometimes our victory lays off in the future, on the other end of a path marked by what the world may consider failures.
In fact, for the Christian, the only way we can truly lose is to give up.
The argument that there must be a mysticism behind the words themselves because the Framers couldn't have been as daft to allow that much freedom and liberty to the citizens and their respective states. That seems to be driving force behind some conservatives calling for federal intervention in private matters between a man and God, or between local voters and state officials. Not only they overlook the importance of the federalism principles, they even think it's possible for the federal machinery to save a person from his own foolish choices.
Of course, the federal court system is made up of nothing but a bunch of fools like the person being 'saved' by it. To paraphrase Scalia, if you are so afraid of making these decisions yourself, why don't you go to the local bar and ask nine people to decide for you? Let the nine Justices of the US Supreme Court concentrate on their limited Constitutional mandate, instead of asking them to play federal nanny.
