Rep. Anthony Weiner came under fire yesterday for charging that Fernando Ferrer's tax plan would drive jobs to Hyderabad after it turned out Weiner once visited that Indian city, courtesy of a pro-outsourcing group.
The Queens Democrat, who's running for mayor, and 10 colleagues took a weeklong "fact-finding" trip to the city in January, courtesy of the Confederation of Indian Industry.
The confederation is an umbrella group that includes the pro-outsourcing National Association of Software and Service Companies.
Weiner racked up more than $8,000 in expenses that were covered by the confederation, according to records.
On Tuesday, Weiner slammed Ferrer's proposal to revive the stock-transfer tax and pour the proceeds into city schools as a "mind-bogglingly bad idea" that would benefit "Tampa or Jersey City or Hyderabad."
"Wait a minute. Didn't he say he opposed the outsourcing of jobs to Hyderabad, India?" asked the spokesman, Chad Clanton.
Gifford Miller's campaign also suggested that Weiner is a hypocrite.
"He's not only interested in outsourcing, but actually took a trip paid for by some of the biggest supporters of outsourcing," Miller aide Brian Hardwick said.
Weiner's spokesman said the congressman took the trip to find out the extent of the outsourcing epidemic.

Weiner arguing against taxes? When Weiner is the antitax candidate, you know you're in trouble.

In a story in the NY Post earlier this week, about the Dem debate, the columnist reported with a semi-straight voice that the room cracked up when Anthony stood up and said that "in a Weiner administration..."

My dear Liz, I believe the crowd was far coarser than you surmise, and was pondering the, ahem, "other" context of "weiner"

If you think about it..what are the bluest states?..NY, Cal, Mass...they all have overwhelming Dem legislatures, but they elect GOP governors and mayors ..it's almost like they are afraid to give the keys to own of their own..
