Wax cylinder dictaphones were still very common in the 1940's and by that time used microphones and tube amplifiers to drive the cutting needle, which accounts for the good fidelity. I suspect the cylinder was preserved in excellent condition but that it was nevertheless digitally cleaned up.

Aaaah, I never thought of what "dictaphones" were - I hardly think about them at all, much less knew what they consisted of.
