As an aside, here is another little known tidbit from the civil war.
Looks like one J. Chiles, President Harry Truman's maternal uncle, rode with the confederate guerilla William Quantrill. After his election, Truman's mother on a visit, refused to sleep in the Lincoln (she called him a Yankee reprobate) bedroom at the White House.
