Their plan requires a fire-eater like DeLay. IMHO, Soros' plan, or gambit, required Getting DeLay to enable the Left to intimidate conservatives with impunity. Soros' gambit failed after he repeated the same mistake of overestimating Olde Media clout.

They had the same plan a decade ago, too - I seem to recall that the Get Newt plan worked out pretty well for them.
