There was nothing but unbridled enthusiasm when Karol Wojtyla was elected in 1978.
Not so, today.

There is unbridled enthusiasm for Pope Benedict XVI, but naturally the media focuses on the few miserable cranks.
I'm sure if there had been a 24 hour news cycle in 1978, they would have had the same kind of comments in their third-tier stories.
