"He could be a wedge rather than a unifier for the church," said the Rev. Thomas Reese, editor of the Jesuit weekly magazine America

A "unifier" would give Catholics their own Gene Robinson. NO THANKS! A "wedge" will do just fine.

Hazarding a guess that former Cardinal Ratzinger was referring to the Europeans and Americans that adopt "Buddhism," possibly because they can claim to be "Buddhist" and continue to believe what they want, when he said it was self-indulgence.

"We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as for certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires,"

Can he run against Hillary?

"you can tell a lot about a man's character by his enemies"

Yes, the new Pope's enemies 'are legion for they are many'. God Bless him!

Or, at the very least sentence him to serve as chaplain on Carnival Cruise Fun Ships for the rest of his wretched life.

You show no mercy! LOL

Ah, the liberals...foaming and hissing at the mouth.

Like vampires, shrinking from the presence of the cross.

There are a few others I would send to join him...

Gator, I like your thinking!

I am just thrilled with the selection. A smaller, purer church is all right by me!

Most likely.

Todays so called Hollywood "Buddhists" are basically consumers of pop culture spiritualism made user friendly without any of the sacrifices involved.

Reading a couple of books and sitting around meditating, while getting stoned all day, drunk all night and sleeping around in between does not give one "spiritual enlightenment", is makes them self indulgent frauds bandwagon jumping onto someone else's culture for benefits, while ignoring everything else.

Yes, that's what I was thinking.

I know some use "Buddhism" for meditation to calm them from the traumas they have suffered in their lives, but that is psychotherapy (a worthy thing), but not religion (an essential thing, IMO).

Not to be cruel, but its also a great way to make money off of those, who wish for some kind of peace or need psychotherapy, but do not wish to modify the behavior that causes that need.

Part of its pop culture appeal is its "no strings attached" blend of secularism mixed with self oriented therapy and some pseudomystisism.

You can get the repetitive feelings of a tradition and ritual, that makes you feel good, some peace, and no need to change the self destructive behavior that causes all the problems in the first place.

Its the perfect market for someone to exploit for financial gain, all you have to do, is teach people to treat the symptoms, ignore the root causes, and then sell them the accessories....which all come in a book, and catalog.

>Look, I'm not saying Law is without fault but I get sick of everything beinbg dumped on him, and nothing on The 'Very reverend' Cardinal Mahoney, Archbishop of Los Angeles.

Bernie's my whipping boy since I'm so close to his ground zero of perversion. Even one of my theology professors (at a Benedictine run college, no less) was party to the man-boy lovefest that Bernie turned a blind eye to.

One of Bernie's minions, Geoghan, was disposed of in the state prison just a few miles from where I scribble this post.

Bernie, and Geoghan, aside, they pale in comparison to the pure evil of Shanley. I dare say it would take some considerable doing to top that bastard's sickness.

While I'm sure there are equally rotten big fish in the priesthood all across the US, I've had my fill of the priestly lecherous ways here in the socially "evolved" Gay State, Massachusetts, to bother following cases elsewhere.

On another note, the Pope's second act should be to bounce sKerry and Fatboy from the ranks of believers.

When that or banishing Bernie happens, I'll know He means business and is taking no prisoners.

Thanks for the ping Ernie.
Although disgusting to hear, it is gratifying to see his unworthy detractors pitching such hissy fits. Wow, they're miserable.

But so apparently continues the troubling thread of the RCC "reaching out" in some manner to religions that don't even call themselves Christian. He's not worried that the 'faux-Buddhists' are not calling on the name of Christ -- he's worried that they're not ascetic enough!

"Communion to those who support such "manifest grave sin" as abortion and euthanasia. "

Oh and they are not?

It figures a Jesuit would say this sort of thing. From the enlightened branch of the Church.

The group that enlightened us by bringing pedophiles, dating priest, and relativism to Catholic schools everywhere.

Where would we be without them.

I hope his first act is to defrock that pedophile masquerading as a priest, Bernard Law. Or, at the very least sentence him to serve as chaplain on Carnival Cruise Fun Ships for the rest of his wretched life.

'Megan's Law' would only apply in US territorial waters.

Would have been interesting to have heard my father's opinion if he were still alive. I remember back in '83 he said that he thought the pope after Pope John Paul would be the one to be a pope who would try to bring down the Catholic church. I am sure he would have been happier with this choice.
