He did not skip it in his autobiography. He was forced briefly to join the Hitler Youth (it became compulsory for all kids), got out, then later was conscripted into the German army. He ultimately deserted and surrendered to Americans soldiers.

He has been instrumental in some of John Paul II's most important moves towards a more positive Catholic relationship with Judaism. He is not an "ex-Nazi" Pope but the last Pope we are likely to have who has personal experience of 20th century totalitarianism and has thought deeply about its evil.
