When the teachers are the ones not only failing to live it out, but causing - nay, forcing - their students to deviate from the teaching, it is a bit more complicated than "ignoring your teacher's instructions."
It doesn't seem convoluted to me. Individual persons know the teaching and fail to live up to it. That's what sinners do and, yes, it has disasterous consequences for innocent victims.
