Ratzinger was behind a document called Dominus Jesus that combined two things: a ringing confession that Jesus is the only savior, which all traditional Christians everywhere could join in, and a reaffirmation of traditional Catholic positions on the status of the Catholic Church as the true church. It said absolutely nothing new, it was not directed at other Christians but at liberal Catholics, and it did not stop ecumenism.

As I've said in another post, Ratzinger has thought more deeply about Christian unity than probably anyone in the world. But though he is deeply committed to it, he is also absolutely up-front about the difficulties, which upsets some people. I think he will be good for ecumenism before it's over.

Pope Benedict XVI is outspoken in his devotion to the Blessed Mother, another nail in his coffin as far as the MSM goes.
