EWTN is agreeing with us.
They think 2 ballots have been cast.

Raymond's tone and choice of words seem to indicate that they are assuming the second vote (of the day) was inconclusive as well.

I hope it wasn't though, I can't wait any longer!

Patience was never one of my virtues.

For some reason I just keep imagining all these Cardinals gathered secretly in a room playing a mass game of "paper-scissors-stone" every few hours.

So, 3 ballots inconclusive. What might this mean? My .02: This means the end of the Ratzinger option, who was not able to reach 77 votes. So now we move to a consensus candidate, acceptable to the conservatives and to another smaller coalition/ group. My hunch is still with Card. Bergoglio of Buenos Aires.

Not necessarily. Maybe Cardinal Ratzinger has been near and only needs some more votes.

You're right of course. But the 4-hour break, with pranzo (lunch) and riposo (nap) and chit-chat, will likely cause a further reduction in votes for him.

Black smoke rises from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, indicating no decision has been made after the second vote for the election of a new pope, April 19, 2005. Cardinals sequestered in a secret conclave in the majestic Sistine Chapel began a second day of voting for a new pope on Tuesday after an initial ballot failed to find a successor to John Paul.
