Sharon Considers Postponing Expulsion; Peres Wants It Sooner

Vice PM Shimon Peres said today that the disengagement should be pushed forward rather than postponed due to its coincidence with a period commemorating past Jewish tragedies.

“We knew it fell out on that date from the very beginning,” Peres said, referring to the recently publicized fact that the forced expulsion of Jews from Gaza and the northern Shomron will take place during the three weeks leading up to the 9th of Av [Tisha B’Av]. That time period commemorates the destruction of the Holy Temple and a myriad of other tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people.

A special ministerial “disengagement committee” is set to convene Tuesday to discuss pushing off the date of the expulsion, though Peres is calling for the plan’s date to be pushed up instead of postponed.

Disengagement Authority Director Yonatan Bassi told Israel Radio that he had advised Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to push off the implementation phase of the disengagement plan for three weeks, until August 15th, after the ninth of Av. His reason, he explained, was that during the mourning period, observant Jews refrain from moving to new homes and other actions that would be involved in the disengagement implementation.

The prime minister did not reject the request, hinting he may accept the delay. "We must do all we can to ease the residents' suffering," Sharon said.

Pinchas Wallerstein, head of the Binyamin Regional Council, blasted such concerns, saying it is ridiculous to attempt to find an appropriate date for the total destruction of entire Jewish communities in the Land of Israel. Wallerstein added that, “perhaps the current time period is most appropriate, coinciding with the destruction of the Holy Temple.”

No, it's not. I've read the withdrawal was originally scheduled for the 17th of Tammuz, among other things the day the walls of Jerusalem were breached prior to the destruction of the second temple and the beginning of the three weeks of mourning which end with Tisha B'Av. They moved the date by four days. Either way the timing is propitious.

It takes Peres to bring this up again? His solution, speed things up, isn't surprising.

"We must do all we can to ease the residents' suffering," Sharon said.

How about letting them stay in their homes?

"Sharon Considers Postponing . . ."

I have a suggestion. How about this time they wait for the Palestinians to go first?

9th Av, 5765 can be a momentous day of hope and positive movement forward for the world or it can be a day of putrid stagnation and festering evil.

The choice is the worlds to make.

Let's see what the "leaders" of world, including the "leaders" of the "Light unto the Nations" have up their sleeves at the moment.

If they play their cards badly at the moment, the whole House of Cards is going to come tumbling down.

You may be thinking of the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto, though I doubt that was deliberate. The beginning of WWI on Tisha B'Av had some impact. Then there were the York pogrums, the bombing in Buenos Aires a decade or so ago. The expulsion from Spain. The destruction of the First Temple as well on the same day. The destruction of Betar. The Gaza withdrawl?

Try and think of positive things about this date.

Thought precedes action.

What we can conceive we can achieve.

I've not heard that, but I wouldn't doubt it, but I don't think you could verify anything like that, certain things weren't put in writing. Deniers would tell you there are no definitive documents indicating Hitler knew anything about killing Jews, something that "micro" would be hard to pin down.

BTW, most residents of the Warsaw Ghetto, which as I noted did begin evacuation on Tisha B'av were sent to Treblinka. That might be the connection.

And the Nazis were pretty thorough, keeping books on the prisoners and executions. It might be possible to find, but I have no idea how.

That they were. The Red Cross just gave up their records in the last two years. And Treblinka was liberated by the Russians, who I'm sure have copius records that haven't seen the light of day.
