Will Justin Rigali emerge as the "consensus candidate" in the College of Cardinals?
Think about it: He's an Italian-American. He is a distinquished Vatican insider. He is originally from Los Angeles, the largest Hispanic diocese in North America. He was a talented Arch-Bishop in middle-America (St. Louis), and now is the Cardinal of Philadelphia.
How much more qualified does a man need to be?
Will Justin Rigali emerge as the "consensus candidate" in the College of Cardinals?
Could the Italian bloc of Cardinals see in him a sympathetic "Italian" heritage candidate?
Could the Vatican insiders see in him an experienced world diplomat?
Could the Western Hemisphere bloc of Hispanic Cardinals see in him one who resonates with their "Spanish speaking" interests because of Rigali's Los Angeles origin?

Comments, speculations, refutations?
I think they'd vote for a Jew before they vote for an American.
LOL! Damn...
I respectfully disagee.
We need a European pope. Christianity's base is European and that base is corrupt. It needs de-corrupting and another European pope would be the one to do it.
Would that make you the Archbishop of FreeRepublic.com? Do we even have a chaplain?
I disagree that Europe is Christianity's "base."
It's base is Christ --- whereever He is.
And if we depend on the empty churches of Europe of all denominations for anything; we're in trouble.
LOL... I'm curious to see how long before I get a suspension LOL.
They might.
Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger of France is a Jewish convert.
The Italian Cardinals already know which Italian Cardinal will be the next Pope! They will go through a process, maybe, three to ten votes, before agreeing on which Italian it will be. The Italians did not like a Pole for Pope and will not allow another non-Italian to be Pope for many, many years to come!

He's also a bigtime V-II apologist.
I remember watching the EWTN special where they put him out on a stage that had a futuristic technical decor and gave him this stainless steel podium thingy that made him look like he was from Darth Vader's inner circle. He gave this long, banal Orwellian lecture devoted to how wonderful the Second Vatican Council was. My wife was wondering why I was screaming at the TV.
I never liked him after that. Thank God he has zero chance of becoming pope.
Feh. I didn't want the job anyways.
Not enough money or chicks.
Gee, Rome, LA, St. Louis and Philly. What else could a person ask for? The very picture of perfection.
No American will be considered because the Bishops in America (as a group) utterly failed in getting a handle on the abuse scandals. They need to be spanked, not rewarded, and that's why nobody is even floating their names (except of course for Cardinal Rigali and the uncompelling Tale of Four Cities that we read here).
FreeRepublic has more chaplains than the Army and Navy combined!
See?!? I told ya! ;)
He's not a long shot either (11/2), at least he's not according to the public betting:

"He's on the record as saying homosexuals can be ordained."
Can be ordained?
I dare say homosexuals have already been ordained.
Right. And we shouldn't kid ourselves as to what the real cause of the minors being abused is.
Rigali is on record stating that homosexuals can make good priests. Obviously, the record has not borne that out. Here in Philly, where St. Charles Seminary has historically kept out homosexuals, we haven't had near the problems that the rest of the other large dioceses around the country have had.
No way. He was one step behind Cardinal Law in hiding Pedophile priests. He moved a number of them around here before the shit hit the fan.
Now this I hadn't heard before. I knew he was sympathetic to the homosexuals, but WOW!
