I think that hanging, when the calculations are done corectly, is painless since the neck breaks immediately at the end of the drop. Thus the condemned is dead before the shock wears off. FWIW, I also believe the guillotine is likewise painless for the same reason.

So if we hang this scum-sucking weasel, let's not do the calculations correctly. Figure him as lighter than he really is so he'll take a longer time to choke to death.

This should be the other way around, right? I thought that lighter guys get longer drops, so if you underestimate this guys weight he is more likely to get a quick break (and more likely to get an outright decapitation). It would be surer to just slowly winch him up off the floor - then they could let him stand on tip-toes until his legs gave out...
