Once I get into Sussex county the drive is pleasurable. It's the part in Morris county--routes 80 and 202--that provide the pain, and I'd be stuck with that no matter what. So the way I figure, I got the half hour I'm stuck with and the half hour I don't mind. I have a serious scenic route back up to Wantage from Sparta Twp. It's a great ride.

Unless you can live on cactus and mesquite you gotta move away from the border to survive. There are no lawns to mow or dishes to wash down there.

Then I guess it goes without saying that there isn't any lettuce to be picked or very many hotel rooms that need to be cleaned either. I used to live in central Texas - only made it down to the border a few times.

It would be interesting to know the demographics of the people moving in to those locations. We know most are Republicans right now but who are moving in?

That's a real good question and worth of further study. I was surprised when I went looking for the election results and started plugging them into the chart. I thought it would be about 2/3 for Bush and 1/3 for Kerry -- I had no idea that it would be so extremely lopsided.

I haven't seen the impact of people retiring and looking for warmer and cheaper living conditions mentioned. Lots of people want to leave the snow of winter in the NE. The majority of the grow is in the southern states...warmer and cheaper. Aren't Texas and Florida two states that have tax advantages?

Some larger percentage of the county growths may not be job decisions. Just a thought.

Every single one of those Virginia counties except for Fluvanna are getting the expansion from the Washington metropolitan area.

That's a lot of what drives the growth in Riverside County, CA. It's the only affordable housing within driving distance (if you call a two-hour commute "driving distance") of either LA or San Diego. Lots of service workers and public safety personnel buy houses out there 'cause they can't afford to live closer to their jobs.

In terms of actual numbers (not percentages), Maricopa county (with over 100,000 new residents in 2004) is the fastest growing county in the U.S. It also has the most overheated housing market in the U.S.
