The image comes from Mars Odyssey spacecraft, and the image shows the very famous region of Mars called Cydonia. This image was taken on May 5th of 2004, but just released to public viewing on April of 2005.
Just click the Thumbnail image to enlarge Cydonia, and you will see the 1976-77 Viking 1 & 2 so-call Face.
This image is better than Viking 1 and 2 in some ways.

So, billions are spent, and all we get are pictures of rocks. I'm sure we can find rocks that look like faces right here on earth for a whole lot cheaper.

I attended a Hoagland lecture over a decade ago at the University of Washington. The topics of discussion were "Structures on the Moon" and "The Shoemaker-Levy Comet" (which was scheduled to smash into Jupiter a week or two later).
Hoagy showed a bunch of slides of NASA lunar photos and was pointing out these "sturctures" as he went along. I didn't see anything, but I looked around and nearly everyone seemed to be nodding their head in amazement at what was being shown. At the break I asked the two guys I went with if they saw anything, and they said "no, did you?" lol....so apparently we were the only "blind" ones.
Next topic: the comet. Hoagland maintained that it was going to hit Jupiter at a "sacred geometrical angle" which would cause the giant planet to explode before our very eyes. It took enormous restraint to keep from laughing out loud. And again, his wild-eyed audience was only too willing to believe his every utterance.
As we all know, the comet did create quite a show for astro-watchers, creating explosions three times the size of the earth. But the gas giant remained intact. .....as expected.

i followed hoagland for years out of interest, about four years ago he apparently made a clean break with physical reality and became some type of pseudo-mystic.
he lost me with the detailed blueprints of the subterranean martian base, complete with skylights.
hoagland no longer adds anything but wild speculation and his old grudge against the nasa management that canned him for outrageous speculations based on limited factual data. my own judgment based on the latest photo run is that the face is symmetrical... very interesting but still not conclusive evidence of a subterranean martian city.p>

It's just a well eroded geological formation. I guess it proves that there is wind on mars. What's more interesting is if you look at other things around there. There seems to be an old river bed to the right between two other formations, but it could just be a valley carved out by wind.

I have always laughed at the head on that robot.Coincidence I don't think so!!!

Where'd all those dirt-bike, 4-wheeler and SUV tracks come from? Didn't Greenpeace declare this area a vehicle free zone?

He's now got weird artifacts (not natural, with 90 degree angles), that he says was in a dried up river on Mars.
Its entertaining.

He's certainly made a name for himself, shilling astronomical Rorshach blobs. I also found a "face" in this latest image, so maybe I missed my calling.

That brings back the old days, and before Jpl went semi-black out with images from the rovers. This image was to me one of the best, this image was the last picture taken before Spirit went black for over 30 days.
After that it was never the same.

Right side of image...
ps.. Maybe new Director of NASA can make JPL, MSS,and others more honest with the American people and stop lying and providing false informations and images. This would help them get back the american people support and save there jobs and future, and save the space programs from more cuts.
