The image comes from Mars Odyssey spacecraft, and the image shows the very famous region of Mars called Cydonia. This image was taken on May 5th of 2004, but just released to public viewing on April of 2005.
Just click the Thumbnail image to enlarge Cydonia, and you will see the 1976-77 Viking 1 & 2 so-call Face.
This image is better than Viking 1 and 2 in some ways.

Yep, the so-called "face" is about halfway down the photograph to the far left side.

why now ? Possibility: Hoagland has been agitating about Cydonia again.
Possibility: The new Director wants it so.
Possibility: There is nothing to see but some eroded geological features.

Apparently we crashed the site. When I click on the thumbnail, I eventually get the red X.

I don't know the answer to your question.
The so-called "pyramid" can also been clearly seen (near-bottom left of the photo).
