-- The original intent of the founders was made clear in Article VI. Our US Constitution was to be the supreme 'Law of the Land'.
The 1st Amendment then made clear that legislators were to "make no law respecting an establishment of religion".

Thus it is crystal clear; --- no specific denomination of religion was to be respected, by law, as the 'norm'..

The various states certainly required adherence to specific Christian religions. Any argument that this was not true is either based on ignorance or arrogance.

Your argument that various States ignored Article VI & the 1st Amendment is noted.
Why do you want States to do so?

Your argument is illogical. When the majority of states had a requirement that leaders had to be Christian, how can you conclude these same states wanted Christianity separated from government? It would be like saying that a group of KKK members wanted blacks to have the right to vote because they were citizens of the United States.

My beef is not with the lack of Christian requirements for leaders, my beef is with revisionist history. I also once believed what you state until I researched it and found I was misled.

We don't know where we are or where we are going unless we know where we have been. Stay lost if you like, just don't give directions to others.
