In Nevada, Reid Is the Name to Know
Members of one lawmaker's family represent nearly every major industry in their home state. And their clients rely on his goodwill.

WASHINGTON It was the kind of legislation that slips under the radar here.
The name alone made the eyes glaze over: "The Clark County Conservation of Public Land and Natural Resources Act of 2002." In a welter of technical jargon, it dealt with boundary shifts, land trades and other arcane matters all in Nevada.
As he introduced it, Nevada's senior U.S. senator, Democrat Harry Reid, assured colleagues that his bill was a bipartisan measure to protect the environment and help the economy in America's fastest-growing state.
What Reid did not explain was that the bill promised a cavalcade of benefits to real estate developers, corporations and local institutions that were paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in lobbying fees to his sons' and son-in-law's firms, federal lobbyist reports show.

In the last four years alone, their firms have collected more than $2 million in lobbying fees from special interests that were represented by the kids and helped by the senator in Washington.

Reid said he has never used his position to steer business to his family members.

The bill freed about 18,000 acres near the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas for development and annexation, by releasing two parcels of land from "wilderness study" protection. Key Reid and former Sen. Bryan lobbied for those provisions, lobbyist reports show. City officials did not return phone calls from The Times.

I'm up for adoption and jobless if Harry Reid needs a new relative.

Ok, just when the Democrats start getting blow back from the Delay attack we will begin to hear about the "Politics of Personal Destruction". Wonder who will scram uncle first?
But he's from Searchlight, Nevada. This couldn't be true. Could it?
:)
Hey, bud - hands OFF.
This is my state....
MY pork!
Just a quick stop by the court house tomorrow, to change my name to Reid and I'm all set.
Woo Hoo!

Rush was talking about this article on his show today. Thanks for posting.
Yes, and (if you believe his campaign spots) he eats at the local cafe there every day! lol.
Maybe Nevada can get rid of him next election cycle. I'd sure rather see Gibbons or Heller in Washington.
Harry Reid. Ugh.
That was good.
I couldn't believe Nevada elected him again. It was the "Independent Like Nevada" slogan that got the people that didn't pay attention. As if he somehow managed to link Democrats to independents. It was a joke.
They may just have to change that to Spotlight...
Reid's son leaves firm's capital office

STEPHENS WASHINGTON BUREAU
WASHINGTON -- The youngest son of Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has left the Washington office of a prominent Las Vegas law firm to take a job with the Greenspun Corp. in Henderson.
Key Reid, 28, had managed the Washington office of Lionel Sawyer & Collins since it opened on March 11, 2002. He was the only attorney in the office.
Former Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., who joined Lionel, Sawyer & Collins two years ago and lobbies Congress for the firm, worked with Key Reid during trips back to Washington.
"He let us know in November that he had decided to return to Nevada," Bryan said.
Key Reid could not be reached this week. He did not respond to voice messages left for him at Lionel Sawyer & Collins and at Greenspun Corp., a real estate development firm.
In July, the Los Angeles Times published a series of articles listing 17 senators and 11 House members whose relatives lobby or work for clients with business before Congress.
One of the articles spotlighted Reid and his four sons, who all were employed by Lionel Sawyer & Collins, the largest law firm in Nevada.
After being interviewed by the newspaper, Sen. Reid decided Key Reid and son-in-law Steven Barringer, also a lobbyist, should not be allowed to visit his office on behalf of clients.
Bryan said he did not think the newspaper series played a role in Key Reid's decision to leave Washington.
"Not as far as I know," Bryan said. "The senator (Reid) has a policy in which no member of his family can have personal contact with his office. I always handle those contacts. I don't think (the newspaper article) was a factor in Key's decision."
Brent Heberlee, a former Senate aide to Bryan and now a Washington lobbyist for SBC Communications has been hired to replace Key Reid, Bryan said.
Nothing to see here - move along
We in Nevada elected President Bush 51% to kerry 49%
Reid was re-elected something like 61% to 35%
I am no mathematician but it looks like a lot of President Bush voters voted for dusty reid
Go figure!
Let's all fill one out have Senator Reid sign them.
Oh, yeah. I hope the people of Nevada that touched Harry Reid's name on the screen are thinking about that now. And I don't mean the fire-breathing libs. I'm talking about the uninformed CNN watchers.
It's only right. That's how they'd do it in Searchlight. :)
