I saw the gate at the Addison Ave entrance going up last week. Had no clue that this is what is was being tested for. I've seen gates out in "blizzard" areas to close sections of highways. I also think these would help in situations when the President is in town. They expend a lot of man hours posting cruisers at these entrance ramps to restrict access when a motorcade is en route from/to O'Hare. Or like they said in the article, to prevent additional traffic access in case of a major accident on the highway.
I kinda like the idea.
Got this from Muttering:

...over the last 2 days I have found out that two units, one in each town on each side of me have been put on alert... one is an infantry unit... and the other a transportation unit.
yes I know that this doesn't mean they will go... but the possiblity is very high... :bm
this would involve 6 soldiers from our area.... with 2 sets of brothers being called up... and 3 cousins... the 3 cousins are within 6 weeks of being out permanmently...they would have their 6 years of guard duty in... but that is how it works... and all 3 were not re upping..
I'm about sick for their parents.... and the one soldier (one of the 3 - 1st cousins) is to be in Joachim's wedding this fall... best friends through school, signed up for the guards together, graduated together, went to boot camp together and in the same platoon.... tho in different unit... Joachim in heavy equipment and Mike in a transportation unit.
I do too.
It was the first time I'd heard of it though.
