"Bulletin board for terrorists"
Commentary by Arnaud de Borchgrave

Bulletin board for terrorists
In fairness, Arnaud de Borchgrave's expertise is in areas other than computer technology, so I'm not going to pick on him for some of the glaring faults in this article. Suffice it to say that Islamist terrorists don't use blog software, they use forum or bulletin board software packages, most commonly the vBulletin program. The title of Mr. de Borchgrave's piece is more on target than what follows.

Not only can jihadists use forums to facilitate and coordinate their activities, they *do* use them for that purpose. These forums provide a complete communications network allowing for both public discourse and relatively secure private messaging. In fact, I was so impressed with the effective use they make of vBulletin that I bought it for use by SoFIR.

We are told that

DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), prodded by NSA, is trying to figure out how to vacuum clean these electronic bulletin boards for coded messages in seemingly innocuous phrases. Blogs would greatly facilitate coordination of terrorist acts at the same time in different parts of the world.

As I said, the action is not on blogs, it's on forums. And the task is non-trivial. I've been involved in just such 'hoovering' of forums for about three years now. The best bet would be for DARPA to hook up with the black ops guys in order to, um, acquire text dumps of the content of the databases that store the content on these forums. Any less invasive method of downloading these forums as individual html files to then somehow store and scan for actionable content will prove highly problematic. Not that it can't be done, mind you, but trust me when I say that it's a major PITA, that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, and that one must combine technology with a judicious application of good old fashion human intellect in order to be successful.
Some of us have no choice but to enter through the front door as it were, but for those of you who enjoy greater freedom of action, I recommend approaching the objective from the rear.

In addition to the recent market behavior....we have the recent ruling to make it more difficult for consumers to claim bankruptcy. Thankfully I don't see this affecting me...but there are those families who are mortgaged to the hilt, who are not taking into account their variable mortgage rate....plus those with max-out credit cards. If Greenspan keeps up his rumblings, it may just be a matter of weeks until they raise the interest rates...to deal with rising inflation.

With the recent GM/Ford problems that you mentioned, it is just a matter of time until they start to layoff workers. So we could be looking at a summer with oil prices staying at their all-time highs...increased energy costs...passed onto consumers....with maybe an increase in the interest rates....and possibly another hit to the value of 401Ks. tmp02, I think that your thinking is right on target...unfortunately.

tmp02 You are still on my prayer list hang in there. I believe in miracles!

We have a friend who's son-in-law works in a chicken plant. The son_in_law is very ill they think from something in the chicken plant.

I couldn't ask a lot of questions it is just not the right time as they have called the family in and don't except the son-in-law to live. They thought he wouldn't make it pass Monday this week.

He is 26 years old with a new baby. It started out as a cold went into pneumonia, now his kidneys, liver and pancreas are all enlarged. They have no idea what he has or how to treat him.

I should know more the first of the week.

You are kindly welcome...I had to go to another link to find his picture. It just makes it easier to remember some of these guys and their horrific dealings.

DC...this is the kind of story that makes my knees weak...and my stomach churn. Prayers for this young man and his family. I hope that since he works in a chicken plant, the doctors have thought to check for a strain of the Avian flu. It may not have officially hit our shores yet, but it would be a good idea to check into this as a hypothesis.

A listing of "Illness" articles from the news this week:

Illness Hits Group Aboard 2 NWA Flights (D.C. to MN - 4/22/05)

April 22, 2005 NWASICKKIDS0422 At least 20 children traveling on two Northwest Airlines flights from Washington, D.C., to the Twin Cities, became sick and were sent to hospitals after landing in Minneapolis on Wednesday night.

Northwest personnel at Washington's Reagan National Airport noticed that some members of the group seemed ill before leaving that airport, NWA spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch said Thursday. The group of 89 people was returning to Winnipeg after sightseeing in Washington earlier in the day.

The Winnipeg group had visited a museum and eaten in a cafeteria, Ebenhoch said. The children were traveling through Minneapolis on two separate Northwest flights. About 30 were taken to hospitals, Ebenhoch said. No other passengers on the flights became ill....

Illness Linked To Frozen Chicken (St. Paul, MN - 4/21/05)

Apr 21, 2005 3:27 pm US/Central St. Paul (WCCO) Four state salmonella cases have been linked to frozen stuffed chicken entrees, the Minnesota Department of Health said Thursday.

The chicken products were sold at Cub Foods stores under the Cub brand name. The kinds that caused the illness were the chicken broccoli and cheese and possibly the Kiev and chicken cordon bleu, according to the health department.

The chicken products were manufactured at a plant in Illinois and have the plant code P-1358. Cub Foods has voluntarily pulled the products from its shelves...

Mystery Illness Strikes Group of Travelers (D.C. to Winnipeg, Canada - 4/22/05)

Last Updated Apr 22 2005 01:36 PM CDT WINNIPEG – Some 50 people who were on a trip from Winnipeg to Washington, D.C., are recovering after coming down with symptoms similar to food poisoning.

The Asper Foundation was one of the sponsors of a program that sent 114 students and 24 chaperones to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

While they were returning home, more than 50 of the group's members were overtaken by an illness that caused them to vomit and left them dehydrated. Eight people were hospitalized; all but two have since been released. Those who became ill had not eaten the same things, but the illness seemed to strike at the same time, on the second leg of the air trip home.

Health Officials Still Investigating Cause

Yesterday afternoon, an incident occurred on the Rowayton train tracks. (Rowayton is slightly west of Norwalk CT.)
My son was visiting, and walking a route high above the tracks on the West side, when he noted a group of approximately 20 youths dragging large pieces of metal onto the tracks. Most of the youths wore white tees- like they were on a sports team. 17 were black and 3 were white.

And I mean LARGE, heavy items-it took four or five teens to pile up some of the metal. One item was a large hook they hooked around the track. It seemed any large metal scrap they could find in the area they were piling- and chaining- onto the track for Metro North. This was around 4 PM- prior to rush hour. The kids saw my son (25) watching them and took off toward a nearby school.

My son crossed the tracks and removed the items, having a great deal of trouble lifting some off. Some he could only shove off to the side. The iron hook was especially problematic and took him quite some time to remove.

He believes these items could have caused a derailment. I am wondering where/if to report the incident. Obviously not jihadi kids, but kids who could have caused some serious damage.

Thoughts?

Public-health experts have a more chilling warning, which King County Board of Health members will hear today: The avian influenza virus that has caused destruction of more than 120 million chickens and killed 50 humans in Asia since late 2003 is just a genetic tweak away from becoming one of the deadliest human epidemics in nearly a century.

Thank you both. Most of the employees at these plants are immigrants.

I am not sure who is the "caretaker" of the tracks in that area. But you could start with Amtrak, and definately the State Police who are located in that area. I would go higher than the local police. Kudos to your son for his observance and his ability to move those items and divert an accident.

REPORT IT Jerseygirl and here's why.

Your son, making that observation and taking the junk off the tracks did a very caring and good deed. Chances are though, the boys are going to come back and do it again.

You will want to report it to:
-Your local police department dispatch so the units can do extra patrol.
-The local train depot so the train officials can watch out for this problem.
-Maybe the crimestoppers line in your area for a headsup.
-Other agencies of interest:
