Wal-Mart Leaves Bitter Chill Quebec Store Closes After Vote to Unionize
By Doug Struck Washington Post Foreign Service Thursday, April 14, 2005; Page E01
JONQUIERE, Quebec -- The baby buggies are all gone. In electronics, only "Le Gros Albert" and a few other leftover DVDs remain. A few pairs of pink boots are left in the shoe department. Over in household goods, red and yellow liquidation tags dangle beside thin skillets as Wal-Mart prepares to close.

Every one of their stores could close this afternoon and it would not bother me in the least. I have never set foot in one.
Now will all those "Mom and Pop" stores who are supposedly always being forced out by Walmart return? Will they hire the ex-Walmar workers for more or less money do you think?
When they get their unemployment checks, I hope they "look for the union label".
They won't have Walmart to kick around any more. ;-)
The employees slit their own throats when they voted to unionize. It will be interesting to see what happens in Detroit with the UAW, as there are rumblings that GM might go into Chapter. As part of the reorganization, they would drastically reduce employee benefits.
Fear! Fear ! Fear ! We are so scared and upset. What a woosey society canada has become. The writer of this story should join them. They all deserve one another.
Good for Walmart. Where they're not wanted leave. We voted one out of our neighborhood. Hell there is one just five miles from here. Good enough if you want to go. The union thing was a nail in the coffin for Canada. Walmart shouldn't back down to the unions. They'd love to get their hands on those billions.
I would be bothered greatly when I realized I was paying 30% more in Target and 35% more in my grocery store for the very same products Walmart has.
Ohhhhhh, you must be really rich. Not to mention coldhearted as hell to want to shutdown the largest employer in the country.
I shop at the local mom and pop.
But, we sure will. :-)
Finally, Canada did something right.
Exactly. Too bad for those people out of work, not that the union really cared anyway.
It's too bad that so many employees got hurt in this battle - but Wal~Mart was left with no other choice. Those union thugs got what they deserved.
I'm sorry, but I have to laugh at some of these employees quoted here.
'We just want to be treated like human beings.'
Oh, give me a break. Our local Wal-Mart is staffed by friendly, happy people.
I buy household products and some food products that I can buy at other stores at 20-30% less. Not comparable products, but the same products.
I give out gift certificates to reward employees at my company. They love to shop at Wal-Mart.
They didn't have to go along with the unionization of that location, so screw them. Bird in hand? Oh well....
Since Sam Walton died, Wal-Mart has become just another Mega-Mart.
"We voted one out of our neighborhood. Hell there is one just five miles from here. "
And no doubt bringing in huge amounts of sales tax revenue.
Maybe I am, maybe I'm not or maybe there isn't one around to set foot in.
Didn't say I WANTED to shut down anything. I guessing any void will quickly be filled and the employees will find new perhaps better employment opportunities.
