2 Killed When Debris Crashes Through Windshield(California)
LOS ANGELES TIMES ^ | 9:24 AM PDT, April 14, 2005 | Wendy Thermos & Daryl Strickland

Two men were killed this morning on the Golden State Freeway in Los Angeles when metal road debris of unknown origin crashed through the windshield of a minivan in which they were riding to work, the California Highway Patrol said.

Investigators believe the grapefruit-size object is road debris and no foul play is suspected, said CHP Officer Alex Delgadillo. The object crashed through the passenger side of the windshield about 5:45 a.m. near Los Feliz Boulevard.

"The whole situation is kind of odd," Delgadillo said. The four other occupants of the van, including the driver, told officers they did not see where the object came from. But the angle indicated it was not thrown from an overpass and there was nothing to suggest it flew off another vehicle, according to investigators. How it became airborne and where it came from was a mystery, they said.

The object instantly killed the two passengers, whose names were not immediately available, and landed in the rear of the van. Delgadillo said investigators were trying to determine what the object is and where it might have come from. "It is not readily identifiable," he said.

"There's a lot of debris on the freeway," Delgadillo said. "People run over pipes that go through the floorboard. Things fall off trucks or other vehicles."

While investigators pored over the scene, all southbound lanes of the freeway were closed, snarling commute traffic for more than an hour as motorists were detoured onto surface streets.

Nasty....says something about the vulnerability of riding a moto-cycle on the freeways, as well.

A few years ago, just before dawn, something flipped up from somewhere ahead of me and skittered across the hood, cracked my Camry's windshield, and left a scraping dent on the roof.

It cost a few hundred bucks worth of deductible to repair, but at least I wasn't one of the many bike riders in the Sepulveda Pass....instant death fershur.

Wow. Very unfortunate.

But, they must've thought it was one heck of a big bug for a split second anyway......

"Grapefruit sized" is just about right to get hung up between a truck's dual wheels and get thrown out the back at speed.

I quit commuting a long time ago...

Ditto....my drive from Newhall to Brentwood and back (beginning at 0530) was a major factor in chucking it all and moving out to La Quinta.

Debris? Several years back a couple of teens dropped a large rock into my fathers windshield. If there had been a passenger in the car they would have been killed. The Memphis police just shrugged it off as a teen prank.

I think you are right. To go through a windshield and kill two people I imagine there would have to be more velocity than just the speed of the vehicle.

Grapefruit-sized object...
...metal road debris of unknown origin...
...instantly killed...

Could this object be extra-terrestial in origin? These objects usually have a surplus of kinetic energy.
